no one mentions poop in these strings (forgive me if one of the aforementioned links does) -- and what to do with it if the water stops running..
.. luckily I'm here to suggest plastic bags and lots of them.

I've found just placing them in the bowl and over the rim works well, make the tall enough so they can be knotted after use, you'll be glad to have a big sealable drum to put the used bags in. 'course if you have a yard or land, you could dig an outhouse..

big sealable drums are also good for all kinds of vermin-free stroage.

I start by having supplies in plastic storage bins that load in my van in minutes and mobile I go. That covers most civil and natural disasters likely to be encountered. In the event I have to abandon my van too I'll size down to a backpack, but that means very slow travelling and not being able to last nearly as long before needing resupply. As long as I can find an open road and maybe a gas station, I should be able to get out of the affected area and live quite comfortably in my van until whatever crisis blows over.

Maybe overkill, but a briefcase from www.saddlebackleather.com is a great way to pack stuff.
Different sizes. some pockets for the ready to use things, separator front to back, room to hold kits within the bag itself, a handy lanyard for keys or a small case you, lots of D rings for hanging things, converts to a backpack very easily....

2. What does it contain? I followed the items from this website fairly closely (see link below). I try to make sure there are multiple uses for each item and that each item is high quality. The problem with most bags (mine included) is that they can get heavy very quickly, too much cool gear I guess

3. Where do you keep it? I keep in my house but I'm working on one for my car. There have been many times we've used items from our bug out bag because everything in there is very useful to say the least.
4. Why do you think you need it? I think there is a tendency to think of a bug out bag as something extreme but in reality it really is just an emergency kit (or 72 hour kit) in some cases. Like I said earlier, there are so many uses for the items in a bug out bag you'll find yourself reaching for it a lot. For example, my family and I were at a parade and it started raining (I mean really raining) I pulled the poncho from my bag, made a couple ponchos from heavy plastic bags for the kids, and we watched the rest of the parade. Nothing catastrophic needs to happen for you to be prepared.
5. What is the make/model of your bag? I bought a hunting/gortex type bag. These bags are ultra tough, masterfully engineered by folks that hike long distances with heavy loads, and the good brands have lifelong guarantees. I like Eberlestock bags because they have a tactical approach to designing the bags.
6. Have you ever been required to put it to actual use? Yes, my bag gets used all the time which makes me think I should make another bag that I can take stuff from without sacrificing my main prepared bag. My wife ate all the jerky from her bag so I'll need to buy some more. I think its important that people go out with their bag so they can get an idea of what they really use and need. You'd be surprised at how much you use some items while other items are a complete waste of space.

A well planned bug out bag makes camping trips a breeze. Espesially if your kids have well prepped bags too. It takes about two minutes to go camping instead of 5 hours of painful preparation (if you have kids you know what I mean).

You could make a bug out bag for training purposes and to borrow stuff from. And a separate one, that has better quality items and may never be affected. A bug out bag can be on the attick, if their is a flood risk. Or it can be on the way out on the floor. You should be able to grab it, even if you are wounded, and the house is filled with smoke.

It is handy to have an EDC-bag that is a lot bigger than you need for your EDC. Than you can add something, depending on the situation: small errands, rain poncho, scarf, warm mittens, extra water bottle, food, etc.

Leather is too heavy IMO for long carry.

1. Yes.
2. More of a framework rather than than a bag I put away specifically for Bug Out. I keep many of the ingrediants in the trunk along with the bag. I adjust to what kind of disaster I might find. I will also food in the trunk specifically for my bag and if I find myself cut off from home for a couple weeks.
3. Mostly my car trunk but often on my back.
4. You never know. I live on a floodplain. I might need to evacuate. Although that has not happened yet, I come close to it every other year for the past ten years.
5. Maxpedition Vulture II. I also have Maxpedition Neatfreak that can serve as a min Bug Out Bag for working in an office.
6. No. In that sense I am lucky.
