Whoa, the hostility!
It's a great idea when you put it together with other technologies. Can you imagine a bike-rider wearing a jacket with 50 red flashers built into it, instead of just a tail-light?
Or, combine it with other technologies, and you could end up with a fantastic heat-management system. http://atmizzou.missouri.edu/jan04/glove.htm. Put on your heat-pipe clothing, turn on your Crees, and you're a living heat-sink! (P.S. Who gets cold while they're night riding? Not you!)

Sure, the actual product (some gloves with a couple of 5mm LEDs in them) might suck, but it's still a great idea.

As it happened, the person next to me had purchased a pair earlier. He said he was dissapointed in the quality and color of the beam, and that it used expensive button cells.

He must not have heard of a place called the "internet", where you can buy button cells at non-ripoff prices.
