At 3.6watts, which is what we think it will be off 2 AA NiMH cells that puts it hopefully at 900mAh at the LED.

This to me = full power:twothumbs

I also wonder how well it would work with 2 X L91 lithium primaries?

I have the 2xAA body with VME head from Valiant Concepts just WAITING for the M31. (I've been playing with it...M60 with 2 x L91 lithium primaries just for fun. Does anyone know runtime vs. lumens in this configuration? I believe as batteries drain, direct drive means gradually lower output? With the VME Little Twisty, since 1 x CR123A primary has same input voltage, in direct drive, how would that compare? All the above is referring M60 at 3v input.)

The M60 likes to see 3.8 volts before it starts regulating, so 2X AA primary Lithium will not do the trick, and like you surmised will be running direct drive. Only for you to be the judge of how good a combo this is. If you had a light meter, you could do some independent testing for runtime, and see how the output drops off over time. I use my light meter regularly. You will be pleased, no doubt with the new M31, with two AA Lithiums, and better yet with two NiMh's if you own them.

Personally, I think 1.8 volt to 4.3 volt would be best. 2 x AA, 1 x cr123, or 1 x rcr123. Wouldn't that cover the most useful combos?

Yes, except that now you're talking about a buck & boost driver for that voltage range. A boost driver (or even DD) will overdrive a single XP-G on 1x LiIon - remember we're talking about a Vf for the LED of ~ 3.2 v, not the XR-E Vf of ~ 3.7v.

I'd much rather have a simpler buck driver for 1-2 LiIons on the M61 and a simpler boost driver for 1-2 AA's & 1xCR123 on the M31. Perfect. :thumbsup:

Well I talked to Gene this morning about the M31L. Unfortunatly my dream Malkoff won't be a reality. There WILL be a M31L but there will not be a one cell body/head that will work with the hi/low switch. Bummer. And from talking with him I don't know even if the M31L will work well with a single primary, though he's not sure yet.
 
You can always make a resistored tailcap... did he give you an ETA?

EDIT: Forgot to ask; Any possibility of running the M31 regulated with 1xAA/NiMH at a lower current? Maybe I'm working from bad information but aren't the other dropins capable of this just at 300-500mA?

More than likely it wont reach the critical 2.4 or whatever voltage it needs to stay regulated, how did the M30 handle this type of thing?

The M31L will work fine on a single primary CR123, just not a rechargeable CR123. I must have misunderstood when we spoke.

What do you guys think would be the preferred single AA/14500 Malkoff solution: the M31 paired with 1 NiZn (1.65 nominal V, 1400 mAh) or an M61 paired with a protected lithium 14500 (3.7 nominal V, 750 mAh)?

I don't have a whole lot of experience with rechargeable cells but it appears by Gene's specs that a single AA NiZn will not run the M31 in regulation (except for perhaps a very brief moment at startup right out of the charger) but it does have a higher capacity than a protected 14500 for presumably greater runtime. On the other hand, the 14500 will run the M61 in regulation down to 3.4V albeit for a shorter duration given it's smaller 750 mAh capacity.

My thinking is the choice comes down to longer runtime but less output with the M31 versus higher output at the cost of shorter runtime with the M61. Sound right?

At 1.65V what kind of current could we expect to the emitter in the M31? Any idea?

For those of you running the M61 on one protected RCR123 or 14500, what kind of regulated runtimes are you getting (the AW protected 14500 and 16340 have the same capacity)?

That would break my heart. My 1xAA FiveMega body has been taking up space on my keyring, filled with a NiZn cell and a Dereelight XP-G, biding its time until the day that I could replace the Dereelight with the M31. Has the wait been for naught?

If you can find an RV7 converter, have someone build a drop-in with it and your choice of XP-G. The RV7 was made for NiMH/Alkaline voltage ranges, and offers 3-speeds. It takes up to 1.8V, so it should work fine.

Ah, ok. Boy I'm messing up info in alot of threads here lately.... must be all this overtime on midnite shift fryin' my brain.

I'm glad to hear that though! Hmmmm..... that gets me thinkin'......

...maybe one of these gifted modders/machiners' in here can make us a sort of "MD1" body so we COULD have the hi/lo switch in it....just a thought.

At the end of last year I posted a thread about drumming up interest for an MD1 and there really wasn't too much response for a single celled malkoff with dual mode capability. I would love one myself, even if it was a two mode twisty. Not to say I'm not completely happy with my current M61W and MD2, but there's something nice about not having to use two batteries.
