The corn will be as high as an elephant's eye and the tomatos VERY ripe probably before I get mine:D

...and a tomato smeared lens shining through a sea of corn stalks will no doubt effect throw considerably!

What version of Deft is the Deft-X? 3rd one? What LED was used in the original Deft? I wonder if Saab will stay on top thru the years as the LED throw king or if somebody will take his title. Recently he's been like Gretzky breaking his own records

5th one. The first was the original DEFT with 150K lux at 1m, second was a cheaper DEFT FTP (for the people) with 130K lux, third was the DEFT HO, with around 200K lux and the last was the DEFT enthusiast, at around 250K lux. All versions used the XR-E, with EZ900/EZ1000 and MCE pills available. The last two DEFTs had a pre-collimators and of course there was a sidegrade DEFT EDC.

5th one and all with the same LED, that's great it sounds like he's honed his techniques, i bet now newer versions will only come along after superior LEDs come along
Edit (4 versions with same LED, now 5th with new LED)

Well, the DEFT EDC used the Cree XP-C led in different configurations (stock ed, "LR"-modified, de-domed).
He also makes the modified lights under OSTS brand, where he uses de-domed XP-E, XP-G2 and XM-L leds.

@yifu: I didn't know that there were DEFTs with 250klux. I thought the best ones were the HOs with around 200k.

I own one of the ones pre-dating the FTPs with un-coated pre-collimator.

When I eventually get my filthy hands on this cannon it's cool knowing that only fifty other people in the world own this record setting light and that makes it priceless.:)

I know I could dig but I was wondering if anybody knows the Kcd of a maxblaster - just wondering how close this thing will be to throw - knowing Saab I would not be surprised if by the time he finishes them he will have got them to be over 100Kcd

Well, The DEFT-X is rated at more like 900k cd, which is ~ nine times more than the 100k cd you are aiming for, so, sure.

:D

Well Since I'm in the hunt and in for a longer wait than most of you guys (post #480), I have been musing on how Michael has, intentionally or unintentionally, scooped us all into buying a light that is tantalizingly close to a very magical LED barrier: 1,000,000 candelas

Anyone care to bet what percentage of the first 50 or so purchasers of DEFT-X would shell out instantly (or after next paycheck) for the Mark II ? I'll say 90%. So LUX says 3 more weeks for the 900K model and I say that in a secret corner of the new expansion area at OMG works, the research is on going...LOL

Of COURSE it is.

That's the point of us funding the research.

:D

Some of us had deposits down the on the DEFT-X before we'd even received the TN31mb that was the previous, (And, well, CURRENT throw champion) in production hands. If the DEFT-Y comes out before we get the DEFT-X, yeah, sure, some of us will whip the PPal into a frothy mess yet again.

:D

Some won't of course, as it is expensive to do things that incrementally, but, some will, just to HAVE it. For some of us, it MIGHT be life and death at stake...such as for long range search operations, etc...so jumping from ~ 400k to 900k cd was worthwhile.

Jumping from 900k cd to 1 Million cd might not be worth another $600 or so, but when it jumps to 1.5 - 2.0 M, MMMMMM, maybe.

:D

Wow this thing looks intense.. Im interested in pulling the trigger on one but worried it might be too powerful for my needs, if there is such a thing, lol.. I do a lot of nighttime varmint hunting, coyote, pigs, etc and am really only limited on shot distance by my lights. Have been using a handheld spotlight powered by 12 volt car battery since Ive started, and its kind of a pain. Would lie something smaller/more portable. Anyways, just curious if any of you owners have tried it out on animals yet.. Does the light freak them out and send them running for the hills, or does it stop/confuse them like a deer in head lights?

1.5 million cd or more and i'm in, but i think it will take the advent of a better/future LED before that happens, Saab probably stretched XPG2 for all it's worth in Deft-X

The beam is very concentrated. If you're shooting at ~ 250 - 300 meters or so, its going to work quite well.

Most of us need at LEAST 1 - 2 lux on target to be ABLE to aim/track at long range with a weapon sight, etc.

900k cd means you'd have 1 lux as far out as ~ 950 meters, and 2 lux out to ~ 670 meters....if you need to hit stuff at night at that kind of range. :D

If you just want to see as far out as possible, and use the ANSI 0.25 lux standard rather than the aim related lux range, the 900k cd puts you out ~ 1.17 MILES.

:D

So, at 250 - 300 meters, you still have ~ 10 - 15 lux or so to see with ( A LOT more than 1 - 2 lux...). This is not so much lux that eye balls melt, etc...its about as bright as say twilight would look.

The beam angle is 1.4º, so at 300 meters, the beam would be ~ 7.56 meters across (~ 25 feet), plenty for containing a target. Its harder to FIND targets with a narrow beam of course....but, the narrow beam DOES get the lumens down range and on target like nothing else. Some people use a floodier light to spot eye shine, etc...and then light up the entire target/check details with the concentrated beam.

At 100 meters, the beam width is ~ 2.5 meters across (A bit over 8 feet). This can be a bit too small a spot of light to maintain target tracking/context if the critter is moving/there are OTHER critters and or things you DON'T want to shoot (Your sheep for example...). You'd also be at 90 lux, which is about as bright as the ground looks if its a very dark/stormy day. At close ranges like that, it can be easier to use a less focused beam, sacrificing some lux to get some beam width...as MANY MANY lights can do 100 meters. Its the 200 - 300 meter ranges where the big boys come out to play, and the little dogs wait on the porch.

:D

As far as behavior, the animals will tend treat it as they would any other light shined at them...so the ones that run, run, and the ones that freeze, freeze, just like normal.
