Teslas quit charging in cold

This is not a for or against EV post. It's simply a statement.

This is simply history repeating. There once was a time when the horseless carriage would not start on cold mornings. Meanwhile the "uber reliable" horse and buggy was ready to go in all kinds of weather.

As a kid I used to see air compressors and generators running while hanging from crane booms all weekend in cold weather so that on Monday they'd be working. The super reliable ability to crank up an ICE in really cold weather requires a block heater in some areas. Ever see a neighbor's pickup truck with an orange 3 prong recepticle sticking out of the grill?

Like the horseless carriage, the source of fuel is a stumbling block and will be for a while longer.
Pretty sure that ONLY applies to diesel which thickens considerably compared to gasoline

I've been getting emergency alerts on my phone all week about the extreme pressure on the electrical grid due to the cold. They are actually asking us to turn off heaters and appliances. They even say use the microwave to cook and not the stove. Not to charge EV's or even plug in block heaters during the day. I guess they would rather let us freeze to death than drive to work. If on average 1 in 70 vehicles here are EV's how is the grid supposed to operate when all vehicles are EV?

Funny thing is the city is always bragging about their electric buses but not one was on the road in the last 2 weeks..... actually I only saw one EV on the roads at all and it was being towed by a gasoline powered vehicle:LOL:
What is your location? We have had no grid restrictions or asking to turn off appliances here in MS

I still want me a Tesla but ima tech guy. I prefer tech rather than old school. Batteries will improve trust me.

I would only consider switching once fuel cells are available with support network. Would never consider EV with all the practical limitations of charging stations, Li-Ion in cold/expensive to replace, giving too much benefit to China.

Very true lux but trust me someday every or almost everyone will want. Ev I predict they will improve that much

This article is FUD. Exon doesn't want to lose your business and choke you to death at the same time. I know more gas cars were stranded in this cold. The reason these events happen is people are not familiar with
the characteristics of electric vehicles. You might lose 8% overnight and 5% preconditioning your battery. Gas cars suffer the same inefficiencies. It's just not news. Like car fires. 100k car gas car fires to 10 electric and everyone is apoplectic. Electric is safer and cheaper. It's coming weather you like it or not. I predict all the naysayers will become fans due to reduced operation costs and will just quietly drop their reservations. The whole point is pollution you're not for that are you? BTW the Chinese are coming like the Japanese of the 70's. Their vehicles are competitive with Tesla and cheaper.

Sure thing FUDman, whatever you say. we believe you more than our own eyes.

Just out of curiosity, have you been to china? have you at least driven their EV, i'm not even talking long term ownership. Did you ever wonder why chinese prefer Japanese and european cars in china? They would take tesla over any domestically made EV, ever wonder why?

Slightly off-topic, but also relevant to Teslas:

A Tesla Model Y hit my vehicle while we were both stopped at a red light. The Tesla was in front of me by about 6-8 feet and at the crosswalk line. My vehicle shuts off the ignition when idle at a stop with the foot on the brake (some European gas saving measure). It'll start the engine once the brake is released enough to allow the car to roll, so I'm 100% sure I was not moving at all as my RPMs were at zero. I saw the Tesla roll back with brake lights on and no reverse lights. I honked the horn to warn the Tesla driver but he still bumped into me. We got out and I asked him why he rolled back, he denied doing so; therefore I said we need to park to inspect the vehicles and swap info if needed.

Fortunately there was no damage to either vehicle, but when I asked him if he had his foot on the brake, he said no. He depended on the auto-hold feature that engages the brakes when the throttle is completely let go. Clearly the Tesla system is flawed in that it won't detect a slow roll on a slight incline, and/or the brakes are not held firmly enough when at a stop. I advised the other driver to use the brake when stopped like a normal car.

A quick Google/YouTube search shows this is not an isolated incident.

I'm an old fashioned gasoline engine, manual transmission guy, so I'm very troubled by how many people depend on computers and driving nannies to keep them "safe," while they are far from reliable.
It is my experience with a Tesla it will hold like glue. The only evidence would be in a dashcam which everyone should have. Don't drive in Russia without one.

As I’ve posted, there is at least one other incident and that one was recorded and posted online. I wish I had a dash cam for this incident, but if it had gone to court and the video from the Tesla’s cameras was subpoenaed, I would have 100% confidence the Tesla rolled back. The point of my comment was that Tesla and really any technology is never infallible, yet people rely and believe in it as if they were.

It is always the human's fault. One way or the other. That is what insurance is for. Socialism for screwing up.

Fuel cells are dead. A hydrogen station costs a million dollars. Level III Superchargers are $33,000.00. Simple 7.2kw charger J1772 is $220. Only takes 10 seconds to fuel. Plug in at night, unplug in the morning. 10 seconds.

Seriously, a million dollars?!?!?!? LOL
The total cost of starting a gas station can vary widely depending on factors such as equipment and real estate prices. The cost may range from $3.85 million to well over $10 million.

An interesting question in this whole debacle is what would need to be done long-term to sustain EV-tech at least in urban areas where travel times might be around 20 minutes tops. It can’t be expensive in terms of energy either or you’ll completely kill off any gains from using EVs to begin with.

NOT much really, just more chargers, even better multilevel parkings with charges for ev and plug in hybrids, this way no cold weather charging issues. dividers in case of fire, so it wont burn cars next to it, most of it already exist in urban environment, it should not be cost prohibitive to add cabling or even structures. it will even generate revenue,
