Looks like an auger shaft for the hopper of a pellet stove.
I thought it was a close-up on a supermarket industrial meat slicer.

Shop vac filter after cleaning a stove.
Yep! I sucked up some embers. Set the vac on fire and smoked up the living room and kitchen.

That was the first time I'd done such a thing in 25 years of cleaning three pellet stoves. I just got in too much of a hurry.
I turned my shop vac into a billows with the fire inside. It took about three seconds.
No worries, we've all suffered from the rare brain fart.

Get one of these, I got one in 2013. No worries with embers.
Someone in our community lost *everything* just a few days before Christmas because they left an ash bucket on their deck. It ignited, spread to their house and they barely got out after being awakened by smoke alarms.
You would be surprised at how long embers can stay hot enough to autoignite after being buried.

Normally, I turn the pellet stove off at night, then clean it in the morning. We were experiencing a snowy, cold February, so I turned it off in the morning, but didn't wait long enough.
I like my shop vac because it has a filter and a bag, making it easier to clean.

What it reminded me of, especially when you said "Think dumbassery." was when I used a used spin-on oil filter cartridge for target practice. I was itching to try out a .30 rifle, I can't remember if it was the .308 Winchester Remington 788, or the .30-'06 Springfield M1 Garand. Not important, which one, really, because either one would likely have caused the filter to ignite and smoke like in your photo. That was back in my "dumbassery" days.

Okay, we never did find out what this thing is. I think I have one, but I don't know what it is for. My dad used to hang drapes and restring Venetian blinds, so I'm guessing it is a tool to do with one of those things.
