Folks don't realize that Solar is still in its infancy.
Those tiny solar panels are a ridiculous gimmick!
You'd need 3 solar panels about 4-feet by 4-feet in size each, attached to each other, that fold into each other. And, an extremely bright sunny day that stays very sunny for several hours upon hours.... to get a proper charge using solar technology.
You won't quite need an array that large to charge a battery bank, but one the size of two credit cards on those power banks isn't going to do much of anything.

My folding 60w panel is ~48"x15". My folding 25w panel is 24"x11". The USB battery packs I use these days recharge at 45w. Being able to charge my battery packs in ~2 hrs is a game changer, especially when using solar.

Still a far cry from being able to create generator-levels of power. At least electronics have become far more efficient. Motors/compressors still lag behind.

I've also been tinkering with solar cells since I picked up my first selenium cell at a hobby shop ages ago. The 20% efficiency is a welcome improvement but still a little underwhelming. There are Perovskite tandem cells that get close to 39% efficiency, but they're only affordable by those with NASA-sized budgets.
 
Tiny refrigeration compressors the size of a soda can have hit the market in the past few years, leading to portable battery powered refrigerator/freezer coolers.

How that came about was the US military put out a bid for the thing, some companies submitted designs. The military went, nahhh, changed our minds. Don't need.

Since the tiny compressors weren't a weapon or other item unsuitable for civilian use, the companies decided to not waste all their R&D time and money, and started manufacturing them. Adam Savage had one built into a cooling backpack for a spacesuit costume. That enabled a much longer comfortable wear time than his "Alien" suit from a previous year that used circulating ice water which heated up in 10~15 minutes.

For photovoltaic panel efficiency, the recent development is bifacial panels. They have a transparent instead of opaque backing so any scattered light hitting the back side adds to the power output. That gets a pretty good boost on clear winter days with snow on the ground. Even if the top side has snow, the panels can still make power from backside scatter. IMHO they should have built in heaters powered from the back side. Fit them with a thermostat and a cutoff for when the front side is clear. For temperate climates, covering the ground beneath and around with white gravel, or having the roof underneath white, works well. Of course the panels have to be far enough above a surface for best backside performance.

Bifacial panels are being used in vertical installs, oriented north-south. Tests have shown that overall they generate the same power per day as panels facing the Sun, but the distribution is spread towards morning and afternoon, with a dip mid-day. Angled reflectors alongside the panels can pump up the mid-day output.

Yet another development is water cooled solar panels where a plate covering the back side has water channels through it. The water boots power output by taking away heat, and the heated water can be used for heating a house, swimming pool, greenhouse etc.
 
Well today i learned if people see you on a roof with a mop in the rain moping folks think your crazy. Even thou i know i was moping my solar cells and its way easier doing in in rain then draging hose up there. Bad thing is im so crazy no one even asked what i was doing 🙃

In a steady rain, I run a pan of very soapy water up to my car and wash it in the rain.

I'm sure some people driving by don't understand; the ones that do, give me hope for our gene pool.

Being sensate and mindful of resources and logistics when doing chores is now crazy. Noted. lol
 
One of the worst things an individual can do is waste their limited resources.
Especially Time. It's the one resource we are all given the exact same amount of, and which cannot be stored. Use your time wisely.

I'd also encourage people to consciously think about how to save time. If you save even 30 seconds for each hour you're awake, that's 8-10 extra minutes a day.

I introduced Ms. TPA to Python (programming language) and Claude AI. With just 3 simple scripts, she's managed to cut about 1-2 hours per day of her work. Her boss was surprisingly receptive and said if she can automate her whole job, he has a job waiting for her at >2x her current salary.

Literally just stumbled onto a post in a different topic in which someone mentioned the accidental death of Marshall over at Going Gear several years back. Relatively young guy. I recall he and his wife recently added a new baby to their family, right before Marshall tragically passed away.

Speaking of time, I'm usually so exhausted from my 3rd Shift job that my days off are when I try to catch up on sleep. Unfortunately, sleep is cumulative. So that's a losing proposition. Just today, woke up after 15 1/2 hours. Shocked at how late it was. But not the longest I've ever slept. Don't think I'll be able to shave off time during my days-off erratic sleep cycle.

I used to do that when I worked 12-hour nights. Once in a while my body just needed to catch up and I’d sleep forever.

A long time and several employers ago, I came into work on a Saturday to get a head start on troubleshooting a device that was malfunctioning. In the back of the device's cabinet was a tangle of wires and a barrier strip with exposed mains voltage, 120v in this case. No problem, I'll just stay away from that barrier strip.

I was feeling unwell that day so my brain wasn't particularly sharp. While working inside the cabinet, sure enough I touched that barrier strip. Bzzt! **thud**
It knocked me to the floor and I landed on my rear end.

No injuries beyond the realization that I was trying to work beyond my capacity that day. I shut everything down and went back home, having learned an important lesson.

That's very wise. It's really something how a new day and a fresh mind can help one to see things more clearly.

Glad you weren't badly hurt or killed.

Yup, a man has to know his limitations.

And, sometimes doing nothing is the best option. Especially if you are feeling ill.

I came across a miswired 277/480v circuit...at 3am (been at work since 6a), 40' in the air on a metal truss, no harness or safety gear. Something told me to check everything with my meter before proceeding. I'm glad I did. Green was hot! Making matters more fun, whoever did this used different colors in each junction box. It was enough to make me question myself and take a 5 minute break just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating from working 21 hours straight.

Yikes! Coming into contact with 277/480v would have definitely been a bad day!
