Could you recommend a cost-effective flashlight?

Since price is the only thing you mentioned, guessing you'd want at least some quality too. Check out the following two models from Sofirn's official website:

1- SP10 Pro AA EDC model ~ $12.55
2- SC02 EDC model (rechargeable) ~ $10.99

www.sofirnlight.com

(Heads-up though! Sofirn sells cheap junk right alongside their better quality lights. If you decide to explore their website, check that "Sofirn" appears to the left of a light's model designation. If it does, you're good. If not, that's the cheap junk that should be avoided. No clue why Sofirn does that nonsense on their site.)

MiniMagLite Xenon. Some out there are still working despite being made in the 1980s. If you could spend a bit more I would say get a MiniMaglite LED Spectrum white with some Energizer or Fujitsu NIMH batteries. Recharging can offset the slightly higher cost.
