Do all rechargeable AA batteries have this problem?

Hi folks,

I have some Radio Shack NiMH AA batteries that don't work in hardly anything because on the top only the very tip is exposed metal, they don't have a ring of exposed metal around the tip like regular batteries.

The devices I try to use them in, flashlights, remote controls and a phone line tone generator, usually have a spring type contact that depends on the battery having the ring of exposed metal around the tip, darn it!

Are all the rechargeable NiMH batteries like this?

IMO, I would be leary of getting anything from Radio Shack that you need to rely on. Where they might be good for finding some obscure electrical component, I wouldn't buy anything from them that you could easily get someplace else.

The positive contact of most AA devices are generally made to make contact with the battery button, if you devices differ, you may want to consider AA sized NiMH batteries from some other sources. Both Target and Wal*Mart carry NiMH batteries that should suit your needs, though I don't know if Santa Cruz allows such stores.

A shocking thing happened at a RS a few weeks ago. I tryed to buy a clearance pack of thier 15 min NiMH AAA's, and they wouldn't sell them because I said I didn't have the RS 15 min charger! I handed them to the cashier, he asked if I had the charger, I said no, and other other employee starts shaking his head and they both say that I can't use them. I explained that the RS website says that you CAN charge them in other chragers, they just won't charge in 15mins.
Guy #2 still shakes his head, Guy#1 says "Well ok, you can try it", and rings them up. At that point I just said Nevermind and walked out.

Anyone ever have a RS employee not try to sell, or DISUADE you from buying something?

I believe there are new Rayovac 15min. AA's that can only be charged in their charger. they are proprietary. I think there's a circuit in each battery.
If the RS batteries are re-badged versions of these, then they are correct.
But I've never heard of employees refusing to sell you something in stock.
BUT....
I have experienced annoying RS managers and employees telling me sale items are out of stock because they decided to keep them for themselves. One fellow was so obviously lying, after I said ok, and started walking out, he hear the employees all giggling.

And they wonder why they are losing business.

Yes.

Radio Shack has a tendency to hire the worst of the worst; the kind of intellectual deficient that couldn't get a job at Wal*Mart. Fortunately, in more and more parts of the country now, the people who lack the skills to work in a Radio Shack have Fry's to fall back on.

I wouldn't let it get you down. You should have just insisted on purchasing the items and asked for their manager (the person who is probably the only full-time employee in the store.)
