Last decades worth of pocket knives ... Yeah ! There be a lot of them & that's an understatement !

WP_20150119_20_58_13_Pro.jpg

The older knives from Pre 2000 : That's an even deeper larger drawer full of pocket knives . I don't want to count .
Seen is a Remington 1306 and ......

A Remington R2213 from 1933 - 40 .
Very tight with incredible Snap / Crackle / Pop ...... This is how they build them in 33 - 40 .
I picket it up a few years ago for reasonable money , used of course ! But for a ... 85 - 92 year old knife ?
Only ?? years old . Would be nice if modern knives were this good !

I completely agree with this, I've never understood why people insist on using knives as axes/machetes?
If you were actually, (god forbid), in a serious survival situation with just a knife, the last thing that you should be doing is hammering it through logs or chopping down trees.
If you intentionally go into the wilderness for any length of time, with just a knife, you are asking for trouble.
Any serious outdoorsman will always have an axe/hatchet or some form of saw, and preferably both.
Just my 2cents worth! ;)
Kind of a necro post, but couldn't you just start a split then use other wood as a splitting wedge, at least specifically for kindling and firewood?

I suppose if the situation required it, yes.
Given that the vast majority of people who buy 'survival' knives are never going to use them to survive, the subject is somewhat academic, but for reference, in my younger years, I never went into the 'wild' or the 'bush' without a hatchet or a machete. But having said that, I never found myself in a plane crash, or abandoned in the middle of nowhere, probably because very few people do. In the event that I had been, I'd probably have more/better information on the subject.

I definitely saw it, some TV show, guys were dumped on an island, given a Swiss knife and given the task of starting a fire and setting up a shelter. Everyone broke their knives. And then the instructor showed this method. The guys looked something like this

I guess it was a programmed part of the show

I blame youtube.com for the whole splitting firewood by batoning a knife thing. My first exposure to batoning was nutnfancy doing it to test/evaluate knives. Then I saw other youtubers doing it, too. I don't know if people are still making videos like that or not, I stopped watching those youtube videos.

My kids are grown and out of the nest, I don't do scout leadership any more, no more camping, hiking, hunting or fishing, and darn few road trips, so little chance of needing to make a fire with branches. I hope civilization keeps on (no pockylips) so I won't be thrown into a survival situation.

I always hacked wood with a knife when I needed to . ( Never took an axe )
Heck , didn't even own an axe till a few years ago .... Now I have 3 cheapies .
Hehehehehehe , what do I need an axe for ? Chopping toilet blocks ! U know , those little blue toilet fresheners that turn the water blue .
I have a seriously sharpened axe that makes slicing them a breeze ! ( I do not lie )

If a knife can't stand up to a little hacking .. Obviously some of the battoning is crazy , but within reason ..
And some of the shenanigan's are in the interest of testing or ENTERTAINMENT ! Yes , the watcher is being entertained . ( U Tube )
If you get enough views , you can earn Ferrari Money ! And some do U tube as a Main Earner , Cos they can entertain !
I can't entertain to save my life ! Ok , sometimes I put something out there that got Thousands of views ( Rarely ) . My best effort got over 30,000 views / Maybe more . Mostly I was lucky to get 100 plus . Some people know how to get views ( DBK ) . And they meet demand with supply .

U tube is a great reference source and a great supplier of BS . ( How many U tube rave knives have I been suckered into buying to find that the hype was just fertilizer ! )

Here in Oz there is so much litter on the ground ( Bush / branches ) that all you need to do is spend 5 minutes gathering stuff , hack it with your knife into smaller bits and start a fire . I don't think I ever battoned anything . And never needed a saw or an axe . ( Australia for you ) The forests are littered with combustible materials .

Hey old4570! I suspect that when you wander off into the woods, in addition to that axe you are probably totin' a well used lever action in 45-70 government. Never give the opponent an even break.

Sorry ... I wanted a 4570 ... But it was a 30-30 / 308 / or a 300Win Mag ..
4570 came about ...
1) I felt old @ 45
2) I wanted to at least live till 70 ( I thought that reasonable )

So for the internet = old 4570 .. It wasn't so long before people started pointing out the Springfield Carbine @ the Marlin Lever Action .
Butt .... When I came up with it ( old4570 ) the cartridge was not part of the consideration .
Don't get me wrong , I wanted a 4570 Marlin and I wanted a 358W in a model 88 ..

And one day I found a 358W in a 88 ..................................... and it was garbage ! Did this guy throw it at every rock he found ? ( It was trashed )
I never found a Marlin in 4570 ... I even looked at the browning lever action in 358W ( Rare ) .. It was junk ..
Yeah , people might be motivated to sell junk .. But I am not a motivated buyer when it looks trashed .
