RE Late night phone calls
When my wife and I were first married, our phone number was either one digit off or a number transposition from the local Pizza place (I can't remember which) - we used to get calls for pizza at all times of the day and night, most of the time, this was not a problem

One Friday night, phone rings - drunk guy at about 8:00pm - I explain "wrong number" - 2 minutes later - same guy, 2 minutes after that, same guy - on about the 5th or 6th time, including having let it ring 10-15 times, I just decided to play it smart - I took the guys order, complete with address, phone number etc. Now I figured that if he didn't get his pizza, the phone would start ringing again, so I called the pizza place, explained what happened, and gave them the order. When I called in my next order, they told me they delivered the guys order....

Door peep-holes.

Years ago, there was a knock on my door. I looked out the peephole and saw a woman selling something. I decided to ignore her and act like nobody was home.

She then tells me that she knows I'm home. At first saw light through the peephole, then darkness (me looking through the hole), and then light again when I backed away.
She explained this to me through the closed door and then walked away.

I live in an apartment without a peephole now. If I did have one, I would have it covered so NO light could be seen from the outside.

Have you ever gone out at night with your house lights on? Give it a try, have someone walk around inside, have them stand by the window, and where you would look through the peephole. Can you see them? Maybe not at a distance(a neighbor). Now if someone was going to break in, they would not be that far away. Stick your face right up on the window, what can you see? Nothing?...Good. Something? Your belongings? Can you see where someone is inside? Right in front of the door? Look through the blinds, around and under the curtain.

At night when someone knocks on the door, and doesn't answer when I ask who it is, I quickly turn off all the lights so they cannot see my shadow walk around. There is enough light from the streetlights and neighbors that I can leave my tv on to give me enough light to walk around inside without them being able to see in. As long as there is more light outside than on the inside(think two way mirror). An Arc AAA or regular Infinity works very well.

I might sound paranoid to some. I don't think so. When someone knocks on the door, and I don't who it is, I don't want them to know where I am in the house. All I know is that I will not open the door unless I feel safe.

One time, my dog barked and woke me up (I am deaf). I pulled my handgun 45acp and end up saw traspasser on my property. I yelled get out of my property and this guy saw my gun. He scared to death ran away never bother me ever since! it was in 3-4am and i sleep peaceful no one would dare foot on my 1/4 acre land.
