I'm looking for a light to get my son. I let him play with his big sister's rayovac indestructible 2AA. But it's too bright for him I think. I'm looking for something around 50-80 Lumens that's 1 or 2 AA. And had either one mode or two modes and starts on low. Clicky is easiest for him. And under $25.

Any thoughts?
 
Still my all-time kid's favorite: the Gerber Recon - 1xAA, colored lenses built in, 5MM LED that won't blind anyone, run it from a NiMH and it doesn't matter if they leave it on, ~$20.

Wouldn't over 50 lumens cause eye damage if he looked at it long enough...I would think and cheap enough low lumen light should be fine for a 3 yr old. I would think the dimmer the better. Children's eyes are very sensitive under a certain age.
 
My daughter is turning 3 in a couple of months and I've been looking for something very similar. I've decided to get her a Nitecore Tube. They're about $10, 45 Lumens max, starts on low at 1 Lumen, single button operation (she'll figure out the multiple-press functions of it quickly I think), and it's got a built-in li-ion battery and recharges off of micro-usb. They're made of polycarbonate so they'll be nearly indestructible; it's the same material from which safety glasses are made. Only downside I see is that it's not waterproof, so no underwater use. Should be just fine in the rain though. I might see if it's possible to fill it with some kind of epoxy or LOCA to make it waterproof.

Also, they come in a bunch of colours. She's going to love it in pink!
 
Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure about that recon. Looks like a beast.

I'm thinking the tube might be good.

Part of the problem is that I spoiled them with higher power lights like the indestructible 2xAA so now I'm worried if I get something much less powerful then they'll complain.
 
Kids - especially that age - are pretty simple; they're such special little souls. If you make it "special" and "theirs", they won't care about how bright it is :)
 
Far to young for an Led light,you should be reported to child welfare in my opinion but that is my opinion only and I know others will have there own views.

wow. Just because it's an led, doesn't mean it's dangerous. There are moonlight output flashlights that can be perfectly safe for the child. Many toys that children play with have batteries/electronics in them.


There are many led flashlight designed for children. The Disney/Marvel light below is an led.

Seriously I am not in favour at that age using an Led light,a little incan Disney torch is fine but no Led,s just yet perhaps another 12 months when he is four but not for me at three.
 
Star halos suggestion has a spring, which could snap off and post a hazard.

I would probably recommend an older version of the Inova X1, toss in a energizer lithium, then blue locktite the threads so its momentary on only. The light effectively becomes a single piece unit, probably last forever given its a single 5mm LED and a battery with a massive capacity.

mcnair55 does have a valid point though, but... where do you go to find a incan torch nowadays?

I guess it's kinda like the "new" ways parents are raising their kids now - can't feed them cereal (only breast milk or formula) before they are 6 months old, can't feed them peanut putter before they are a year old, can't let them do this or that til they are this age or that age... blahblahblah. Whatever... not my circus, not my monkeys... thank the Powers That Be!

I am 60 and I grew up very much different to my own kids and there kids are growing up different as well.I loved a torch as a little fella together with my first air gun.It is ironic you mention breast milk,there is a new campaign being thought out in the UK to reward new mothers with £200 worth of shopping vouchers if they will breast feed instead of using tinned baby milk.
 
I agree that the light level needs to be somewhat limited, get him something a little bit brighter each year for Christmas.

Excellent suggestion by Mr Halo,i will throw in ..................wait for it.............a maglite...............yep you read that right. I would go for a 2xAA due to a nice size,not too heavy or too small to loose,as long as something moves(head) it gives them something to focus on............yeh yeh pun intended:p Plus built like a brick lavatory ...........

I know not a clicky and some can be difficult for young ones to operate due to pressure required,where as head twisting is easy,not to mention being safe in the brightness department.

Also i like the coast or lenser zooms,simple AA light and the zoom will entertain them for ages:thumbsup:5yr warranty too ..........
 
The other nice thing that I like about the Nitecore Tube is that there are no loose parts - including batteries - to get lost, swallowed, etc. Kids accidentally swallowing AA's and AAA's is more common than one might think, is extremely dangerous for them, and I think is a greater potential hazard to a young one than a low output light with zero detachable parts.
