Last run of Makai heads.
Surprisingly nice on a single AA and Single 123 pak but the 2AA pak is where it's currently living.
The LE is a 3S with a modified T-Pad and de-domed 519a 5700K. It's a beautiful beam and plenty powerful at (only) 650mA.
How is the hotspot with a dedomed 519a? I have one with Domed 519a and one with XPL Hi and the XPL Hi has quite a distinct hole in the beam

It’s beautiful, no donut hole.
The focus on the Makai needs a bit of distance, so close up it will have a bit of a hole with any LED. I can’t give an exact measure right now but it’s a fair bit more than say a Haiku. E.g. using a guesstimate, if a Haiku needs 10cm then the Makai might need 40cm (from the target of illumination).

Are you getting the hole (with the XPL Hi) at reasonable distance?
I do have an XPL Hi engine but I’m not tempted to remove the 519a de-dome and haven’t tried it yet.

The beam with the (5700K) 519a de-dome is very clean with minimal to no tint shift in the corona/spill. Lovely clean and white. A really nicely balanced combination with the reflector all round.

In time I’ll add some beam shots etc.

Ahhh that makes a lot of sense. It's probably only a donut hole at roughly a foot or so, so maybe it's to be expected with a reflector that large.

I've been loving the Hive engine with a 519a

Good to see a bit of movement at the station, for the word has passed around.

The FFL 351a 5000K is a really nice LED!!
I was thinking that.
Don’t mind a peachy warm tint, like what that 4000K has but overall I’m a whiter whites kind of LED guy more so than ever these days and that 5000K is looking clean indeed.

What is your favorite emitter for the Makai head? So far the 519a has been the best beam for me. I was wondering how a SFT40 or SST-40 would do.

It’ll work with a range of LEDs.
I haven’t done a lot of experimenting but I’m really liking the dedomed 519a (5700K) in mine and I don’t think I’ll be swapping it out.

That looks like a fun novelty. Very orange in the pic, how’s it compare to candlelight (tint wise) and what’s it like in use?

Hard to get actual tint shots of this low CCT tint accuracy, anyway. It’s super nice. It’s like being around a campfire 🔥

I’m not a low CCT guy but using this around the house late at night or even let it light up a room at night is simply awesome

I still and always will prefer the 5600k model, however using this very warm sapphire is rather fun and unique
