ok gang. The i5R uses one of Olight's 14500 batteries. What I need to know is, can I use AA L91 or Eneloop Pro in it? I understand differences in performance etc. so I just need a simple "yes. If you put a AA battery in it it will turn on like a flashlight" or "no. You'll blow yourself to smithereens"

Yes, it also works with alkaline, NiMH, and lithium primary AA cells, but the initial output on high is lower. Note that the 14500 it comes with is a very unusual 2.4V Li-ion cell.
 
Yes, I'd be careful even calling it a 14500, because that is not what it is. It is a AA-sized 2.4V output cell.
So they made a battery that is the same size as a 14500 Li-Ion, but with a different voltage?
What were they thinking? Who out there in flashlight-world was asking for that? What advantage does it have?
Also -- what's the chemistry? Is this a standard Li-Ion chemistry that is bucked down to 2.4v, or some other blend of chemicals?
All baffling.
 
Old thread I know but, yes an any AA sized cell will work as long as the output voltage is less than 2.4 Volts. It is an Olight so yes it will eventually blow up in your hands. Not only that but the shards will seek out any family members in the vicinity and instantly kill them as well.

As far as I can tell it is a 3.7 V 14500 bucked down to 2.4V. I'm sure they do this intentionally so you are forced to buy a replacement cell from them. Since they are usually out of stock or discontinued you will be forced to buy the new version of the light. Planned obsolescence.

I wont buy any light that uses proprietary cells any more. I have given away most of my Olights to people who still buy duraleaks.

I have a feeling that it's because they're using older 2×AA drivers/cells or components that were otherwise just sitting there. In my opinion, the i5r high cri was one of their better lights, albeit with a noticeable greenish yellow tinge. It'll still run more standard AA cells at a reduced output, but at that price point, there are other, more versatile lights.

While I'll agree that a 2.4V cell is eesentially proprietary and otherwise pretty useless unless you're specifically looking for one, it's not exactly "faulty". Now on the other hand, placing two exposed terminals on one side of a "rechargeable cell" could be considered faulty, since metal shavings from mass production could easily get in there and short the cell.

I was really commenting on Olight and their fans in general more than the i5R, which honestly is one of their only relatively decent lights.

Unfortunately...their Oclips are decent, but their i3e and imini 2 are hidden treasures, lol. They have some cool stuff like the prowess, but in my opinion they've been pricing their stuff out of their own target market.
