Eh, not exactly "poor man's", but rather "I don't really want to pay $90 for it".
There is a known trick that lets you convert the throwy L1, LX1, E1B or any other lights with 1 inch head into a floodlight... Which involves simply attaching a plastic bottle cap to the head.
I always wanted to make an improvised diffuser for my L1 modified by milkyspit. Running on RCR123A, it already does between 7,000 to 9,000 lux, throwing just as far as my T20C2 MkII. Obviously, it falls rather short on flood department. The plan got a boost after I participated in another thread where there is a debate between throw and flood, which can be found here.
At first, I used nothing more than a bottle cap, a piece of plastic tubing and some duct tape, which resulted in this;
It was decent, but I wanted something to prevent the cap from flopping around when not attached to the head because there was nothing to "lock" it in.
After various planning, I almost gave up. It seemed like I couldn't find anything in my house to achieve the goal... Until I stumbled upon exactly what was needed.
A binder clip.
After using vise grip and pliers to work the magic and taping the parts together, BEHOLD!
And, now, for the obligatory beam shots.
As you can see from the two photos above, what was an intense hot spot got turned into a massive wall of light.
Provided that it can survive the abuse, I believe that the improvised diffuser will stay on my L1 indefinitely.
