Zirconium has heat retention that is more similar to ceramic, but isn't fragile. It's very hard and doesn't ding up like a metal. It's nothing like titanium. It's very hard to machine, so it's expensive.

It's mostly used to create alloys and for VERY niche applications in spacecraft, medical implants, and reactors (specialized alloys) so very little of it is processed into the metal, in the grand scale of things, so it's very expensive as an input material, and as mentioned - hard to machine. Mostly, the machining issue is it needs REALLY SHARP tools, which means you're often replacing carbide bits regularly, so it's a slow and expensive process.


If you're ever curious about a specific material, track down a data sheet from a supplier. They typically offer really great specific info on the alloys they sell:

My first reylight.

This is a very nice light. Though I wish they offered higher end options, say more precise machining and materials, but as itself, I have no complaints.

I do want more, but 14500 is the perfect size for daily carry.
I do want this in a polished zirconium! 2nd aux would be awesome too.

He does offer Zirc and Mokume, I don't know what can really get any better. I think the machining is pretty close to perfect and on par with some USA made customs, in fact I've owned several USA made lights above $400 and I've noticed some flaws in the work. For the price, they are best you can get. Probably my favorite lights besides Peak

I can afford it, but anything outside of a used car, I refuse to pay THAT much for any flashlight. I'm sorry, it's no where remotely worth $9K. I mean, Luxury watch brands pull the same nonsense all the time. Sometimes for the cost of a small house! But with those, you're paying for mostly a status symbol with name-recognition. And brand history, Horology; for back when the brand actually was innovative. (Heck, there have been Rolex executives who with no shame have admitted that they charge a premium of thousands of dollars just for the Rolex name itself to be seen on a customer's wrist. With one admitting that without said premium just for the name, a Submariner would cost half of what Rolex charges for one.) This flashlight has literally none of that. Yes, it's interesting, yes it's innovative. But so were lava lamps, and not even remotely priced as much as a used car.

I think once anything is at Korth prices, the question starts becoming, "Why would I get this instead of a Korth?"

Maybe one day I can convince myself to get a Korth, but $9,000 for a flashlight?
Unless I end up with a pile of money, or inflation gets so bad that a Convoy T10 is $9,000, I just can't fathom spending that on a flashlight.
 
Several years ago, Reylight offered to INSTALL
tritium tubes in flashlights which I purchased
from him. This was *WONDERFUL* ! ! !

Sabrewulf, that looks like a LANapple triple. I don’t see this on Rey’s site. LANapples have a single reflectored LED. Where did you source it, or was it modded?

Exactly! One of their revolvers would definitely take priority.
 
That is a beauty! I really like mine. I picked up a blue al one over the holiday! Mine has a different button cap?
 
I didn't go through every post in this entire thread that started 2+ years ago, but are there any lumen ratings and runtimes for these Reylights? I'm done buying lights without knowing if they will be efficient long runtimes and have a low enough moonlight or firefly mode. 2% is listed for moonlight mode. 2% of what???
