AGREED! Which is precisely what I referred to with the phrase "Lumen race" in Post #3. When I read a light - any light - is X Lumen, I expect (despite knowing better) that light to be able to maintain that number until the battery cannot deliver the power anymore.My thoughts --

Blame the ANSI direct drive standard... it's why I appreciate Malkoff. Olight doesn't do TOO badly about their lower runtimes these days, and they're pretty transparent about stepdowns...I want to say they were among the first to do that.AGREED! They could all have skipped the thermally limited <30 second Turbo mode, and any High mode too that is thermally unsustainable. And I really don't care what any manufacturer argues - a 1000 Lumen flashlight that drops to 500 Lumen after 2 minutes due to heat is either a 500 Lumen flashlight, and should be marketed as such, or inadequately built in my book.
Not sure what you mean by 'real world'. I buy lights trying to be specifically related to what I will use them for. My recent purchase of a Fenix E03R had me quite a fan. I only really use it around the house which is what I bought it for. Any waking moment is 'real world' and the E03R works at home as does my Fenix TK05R for a small pocket thrower which I use for building inspections. Having said that I did actually use my E03R in a large black painted wall auditorium, at night, and was able to light the whole place up. (size of auditorium, approx 25 x 25). It was quite impressive.I've had a few Olights, and I can why people like them, but I'm done with the brand. I think they are a bit 'style over substance'.
I've only had one Fenix, a tiny E03R (the first one). It's impressive regarding build quality and output, but quite useless when it comes to real world use. I'm sure their 'proper' lights are decent, and I would consider one, but there are more budget friendly brands I would prefer to spend my money on,
If I had to choose a 'team', it would be Fenix, but I'm certainly no fan boy.
Yes. That’s why I don’t really focus (excuse the pun) on turbo modes as they lull you into a false sense of overwhelming light when you also get overwhelming short run times. Good place to look is the run time graphs and see how quickly that power drops off for the power you likely will need for the work you do. Also, forget the turbo and focus on the lumen level that comes in second or third brightness mode selection of the light. This could be your sweet spot. So if a light says 3000 lumens for an hour, which we know won’t happen, then look at what you get for runtime at say 350 lumens and if 350 lumens will get the job done and offers a true, ‘based on the graph’ run time then you probably will have hit the jackpot.AGREED! Ooh, brother, you are in for one rude awakening when you realize those things are mostly suited for lighting the way to a bigger light, with actual runtime. But I agree with the sentiment - at least that is my excuse for owning, well, with the ones I just ordered...80 lights. I obviously need them all - a small light to find the bigger light (3-4x 18650 / 2-3x 21700) in the dark, then another big one in case the first big one runs out of battery. 2 headlamps - one small and one big, depending on how much handsfree light you expect to be needing (small oen for getting the mail and the big one when doing work). 1 light for doing walks - with another as a backup. 2 emergency lights in the car. Several hCRI lights for various detail works. Basically at least 1 ligt in every room. Enjoy your light world. Sounds like you’re having a lot of fun. Glad you like your LR35R, I will have a look at this. I just got a PD32R and whilst I haven’t done much with it, like it. 10.000 Lumen max (which is the meaningless Turbo you referred), but it can actually do 3000 Lumen - which I actually often use and need - for a reasonable amount of time. It got both the runtime and the power and the portability to technically replace several other lights. Which is why I own three LR35R's...and wanting at least one more. Only downside is it does nothing for my hCRI needs. But 1200 Lumen for 3 hours, or even 450 Lumen for 8 hours? That's easily room illumination levels if the power is out and it's dark outside. Though for that specific use I got a Sofirn BLF LT1 lantern, plus a 30.000 mAh powerbank.

For me, ‘real world’ use was to have the light on my keyring for the odd ocassions that I might need a light when out and about. It comes with the cell. It's a quality cell. And it's been modified so it can work with their onboard charging. So why is it being proprietary a bad thing?Not sure if this is a question or just showing us some lights, but for me, it's Fenix
Olight lost my interest with their proprietary battery nonsense, but both have their up- and downsides.
Fenix lights are, to my knowledge difficult to modify / do LED-swaps, and their LED choices are pretty much low-CRI all over the board. And they absolutely had to chase Nitecore in the pointless Lumen race, exchanging runtime for thermally unsustainable Turbo-modes.
Olight have a larger range of LED-options, and typically a more aesthetically pleasing design. Though I have personally always been a more function over form-guy. And Olight is supposedly, at least with some models, easier to modify.
Both have as far as I know good build quality and warranty, and I would overall give my money to Olight if not for that special battery requirement BS.
I know not all Olight lights uses a proprietary battery, but they are really bad at conveying which of their models needing a special cell, and for that alone, I go with Fenix.
