we are doing very well on this thread just debating and no fighting great jobs gals and guys .. ..
 
Look, I don't have any issues with electric cars. I do take issue with somebody not stopping to charge it. Today was the second time I was stuck in a backup several miles long because a dam EV had run out of battery. I'm never surprised to be stuck because a car ran out of gas mind you. Not saying I prefer that either.
I’ve only ran out of gas on my stupid Honda Navi omg what a pos not even a gallon fuel tank lol. Btw I rode this thing all the way from Georgetown ga to Gainesville ga. ROFL at Kent pint I’m on the busiest highway in the world going thru downtown atl lol. That day sucked I tried to go on just slow streets til I was in do atl and dang buildings killed my gps singnal at this point I was so pissed I saw a sign. For i85 and said screw it im getting on i85 on this dumb Navi lol.

This post gives me cause to ask - Can an EV be pushed if/when its battery has been depleted? Serious question. I do not know the answer. If not, it should be legal for Bubba to push the dead EV from the road with his V8 4x4. Not kidding. 😁
 
Yup. Dictatorial. Fascist, if you will. Product choices by force, combined with effective shaming and vilifying until people get backed into the corner as "the bad guys."

I'm all for technology improvements if they ultimately prove to be the better "mousetrap." Undoubtedly, though, as with nearly every other thing made, it won't prove to be the best choice for every situation/factor. Which is why choice is so vital. If eventually the weak points (of the vehicles and the system of extraction/build and 'fuel' delivery) get great improved, then so be it.

usually no. you can only tow it on a flat bed, cuz wheels locked up, and they have no neutral. . it would damage the car if he was to push it.
 
It’s funny how different we all are but still are a bit the same. Omg can you imagine if we all ever met? Will there have to be monitors and chaperones and who will bring the pizza

and reminds us of the track record of gov'ts and this all-too-typical method of getting something done (even if it isn't the best [let alone a good] thing to do):

... It is not accidental or, bad enough, negligence that led to this rather error-prone way of estimating energy needs. Instead this is the sort of strategy used all the time in getting government to do remarkably stupid things: mislead about what the actual costs and benefits of achieving a goal would be.

Time will tell whether this push and "up-ending" ends with the "right" portion of the solution. Getting it wrong via dictating whole economies and power-delivery networks and individual costs be turned on their heads in short order could end every badly for a very great portion of the world's people. Including the pushers themselves, who are just as reliant on everything.

Depending on the type of EV it might not take much effort to push it, although Aging Wheels newly acquired Twike doesn't look suitable for cold conditions, actually it doesn't look suitable to anything above a 40Km restricted residential zone 🤣

From what I understand, EVs are so much heavier than a gasoline fired vehicle, so although maybe possible, probably more difficult.
 
Sorry for the long essay, but since this discussion keeps going, here are a few things you don't hear a lot about. Read if you want, or skip on by. With this cold weather, I'm seeing all of these articles about EVs under-performing. One says to put it in your garage to keep it warm while charging. Knowing how volatile these batteries can be, and how nearly impossible it is to extinguish the battery fire, and that many garages are integrated into the basement or on the end of the home, NO WAY. I'm nervous about charging a Li-ion cell for a flashlight in the living room. EV? - no way. How will this fare for homeowners insurance? I can picture my agent doing a back flip and saying, "you wanna WHAT? Park a wet snow covered EV in your basement and plug it in? cha-ching. You rates just quadrupled." Even in a detached garage, my motorcycles, tools, trailer, tractor - no way. I'd want that thing as far from a structure as I could get it.

Another issue: I read an article from an electrical engineering point of view about a year ago. I can't find it now because big tech buries articles that don't fit the narrative. It pointed out a few interesting things. Like that most city blocks don't have the electrical infrastructure capacity for more than a few homes per block to have their own charger. And that the same issue would arise with charging stations in cities with electrical capacity, and that they take up so much room, that many towns wouldn't have the space. With the time it takes, you have to have way more room for many vehicles to wait their turn. You can't just plop a charging station where every gas station was, the space isn't there.

And who pays for all of this upgrading and building? The consumer. I don't know what it costs to charge one now, but it will only go up. I can't imagine a country being locked into and totally dependent on EVs. Get your wallets out. Now add in the vulnerability of our power grid to terrorists that not much is being done about, and having open borders, and you've just made everyday transportation extremely vulnerable.

So if we do all of this expanding of charging, and putting stations in every home, what happens then? Power companies burning more black gold - COAL. There would be a huge demand for more electricity. Or go to more nuclear plants? Lots of opposition to that already. Californizstan and other states already having blackouts and telling people to turn your air conditioners off in peak heat. Now add millions of EVs? Do we want to move forward or backward in our country? Combined with the environmental mess of battery disposal and fossil fuel use, are we really doing anything positive for the environment / climate?

And lastly, we all know that our flashlight batteries degrade and need replacing at some point. I don't have first hand experience with an EV, but I've read about exorbitant costs for battery replacement, where sometimes it's not even worth it. With the initial cost of the EV, do you really want to buy a new one every few years?

Bottom line, we're just not there yet ... and I personally have seen no conclusive proof, just speculation, that man is really the cause of the very slight fluctuations in the temperature of planet earth, or that EVs will help. Going back hundreds of years, those fluctuations happened, way before the automobile came about. Many climatologists & engineers are on opposite ends of the spectrum with each other, but the media largely shows you just one side of it. Just look at how much mis-info was spewed and reversed regarding Covid, masks, vaccines, etc. I have very little trust in gov't and the media, because too many lobbyists, foreign as well as domestic, have created too many money driven agendas. So many times I've trusted my gut instincts, and they've turned out to be correct in the long run.

And to add: If an EV works for you and your location, I'm good with that. Go for it! Choice and variety are good things. Me? I'll keep my Ford V-8, my Harley Davidson V-Twin, and my Triumph parallel twin - and no one should be trying to take them away from me in a "free society". Fill 'er up with premium, boys, I've worked hard all my life to be able to afford it.

Apparently the Tesla has a low voltage battery that if not also completely discharged can allow the car to be placed in neutral in order to place it on a flatbed tow truck (or if you're strong enough push that heavy sob out of traffic onto the shoulder). In order to place it in neutral requires electricity. From what I read if the parking brake is released it can go forward or backward (depending which direction the tranny was geared to) and be pushed or pulled.

My neighbor's had a Tesla for several years now,, has to be four years.
It's his primary car and he likes it alot. He charges it via 240V in a garage.

He told me with a full charge he can drive to Chicago and back no problem.
Chicago isn't close by any means,, has to be a good two hour drive at 70+mph interstate speeds.

Next time I see him, I'll ask if he's still on the original battery,, any costs/maintenance etc..

IT will also spin motors, which will generate current that will backfeed into the controller and very possibly burn it, a slow pull like loading onto flat bad is ok, but if you tow it, or push it with wheels on the ground, you will damage it.

The point of my post was to ask if a DOA EV could be pushed to the side of the road so traffic could resume.
 
My eldest has a dual motor model 3 since 2017. Besides a few minor panel fitment issues at first, the car has been flawless.
Most of her driving is home to work or just errands, but she will drive it up to where we are, better than 2hrs away, with no hesitation.
She typically plugs it in at home, and when on the road , there are numerous super chargers that she can use if needed.
It’ll recharge to about 80% in 15 minutes or so. It helps that I have a dealership with a charging station nearby.
I’m pretty sure she’s still on the original brake pads, as the regenerative brakes bag reduces wear that much.
And that thing is ridiculously quick.

Not for me, as I need a van to work out of, but it has impressed me.

If my last post seems like an about-face from my post last week, let me explain.
We just had a massive series is winter storms, followed by very cold air.
The idea of having outdoor chargers for people which that was their only option, is absurd.
I could explain more, but it's not worth the time.

Personally, I don't care if someone has an EV,
but States or even Countries saying its' going all EV by a certain date, only shows they're just politicians/ & posturing.


Manufactures on the other hand, do it for stock price reasons; also electrics are cheaper to produce than ICE and transmissions.
