I wouldn’t let the 14500 only steer you away. I’ve recently purchased these Lumintop 14500 PROTECTED USB-C batteries that are the same size as a AA. These are a game changer in Malkoffs li-ion only lights. However, I’m not sure yet if this new driver will have low voltage protection or not, regardless these are protected batteries.

Very nice guy, and I don't think he's really making any money off this, but it's probably a LOT easier to run group buys on his own website as a storefront than juggling like 6 spreadsheets across forums and social media groups.

It sounds promising to me. But after being burned on the v2 driver, I won't be buying until I've seen some independent testing of it. I also don't really like the domed 519a.

The HTL v3 sound like it might be the same driver? The E2XT(and L) was also recently updated w/ a v3 driver. My impression is the LMH lights were usually just extra circuitry (adding PWM) around the basic driver. Maybe the LMH here has a new "wrapper" that has higher frequency PWM and 7 possible modes around this improved li-ion aware base driver. Obviously this is 100% baseless speculation on my part.

There was a different thread, about the HTL, where Gene did mention that v3 driver will be used in more products. He also said it wouldn't be used in the drop-ins.

The new v3 driver in those lights claims to perform better(brighter) on li-ion than 2xCR123, and to have LVP. But it also still says light tapers at 3.6v. It's unclear if that's a taper from a driver stepping the output down, or from the light switching to an unregulated one.. Personally I'll wait on this until someone else has tested it.

I was really hoping this new driver would have LVP, good news. It does have a special alternate mode to run 2xCR123 at 6v safely

Voltage on this driver is 3.7-4.2

I’m just finally excited about having a 2 mode setup. Low/high. This also has off time memory. Not sure if you can pick between on or off time though

*Below 3.6 volts the flashlight will slowly taper in output. Low Voltage Protection (fast taper) doesn't start until 3 volts. Below 2.7 volts the flashlight will turn itself off.

I have a lot of 14500 cells, but I'm not crazy about Li-ion, BUT...this head fits on any other e-series body, so as long as you're using Li-ion, you can LEGO it into whatever else you want, too.

I'm trying to talk myself out of buying it to put it on an 16340 body to make a stubby MDC.

That's nice! It's a small thing, but I hate the on-time memory of Malkoff's. Mostly it never matters but when using the light quickly it always annoys me.

I’m not a big fan of the multimode Malkoffs in general. However one benefit of the switching as is is that you CAN strobe it in whatever mode you like since you are pulsing the switch less than the debounce limit. Absolutely cannot do this with an off time based setup. But this is a unique use set, and I agree for other quick on-off uses but not as maximally fast as strobing, the off time based setup will be less frustration inducing.

I do particularly like the existing on time based for my AA, which I use at work. For a general assessment I just double click to M. But in the middle of the night if I need to do a pupil assessment in a dark room I can click it on without blinding a patient or blowing my or the patient’s dark adjusted vision. Again, unique use set. And neither mode is a deal breaker. Just thought I would throw out a couple of uses well suited to the current setup off the top of my head.

I’m intrigued by this Kosen release. I don’t really know how I feel. Configurable is great if it is done in a way that is not going to enter configuration mode accidentally and have me fighting to get to a mode while trying to use the light. For instance if I have it set to high only can I quickly strobe it without entering configuration mode. I know and agree that single high mode is better for this, but if we are going configurable multimode I don’t see a reason for the new light if this is the case.

I’ll likely pass on this drop. I don’t need another AA/14500 sized body. If it was a stand alone head I might go for it. In general 16500 is my favorite body size. I’d actually prefer to carry a 16500 body size at work. I use the AA because of the low low and moderate spacing. And it really is entirely adequate for work use. But a 3 lumen low could work, I think.

All that said, I think there are some potentially good/interresting changes being made and I look forward to seeing how they are implemented. I need more Malkoffs like I need a hole in my head but that’s never stopped me before.
