Bounce a pounce bag (loose weave cloth filled with chalk, finely powdered charcoal, or cornstarch) along the pattern lines then when the pattern is removed the fabric has lines of dots to cut along.

horns, hooves, and claws are basically fingernails...cut too deep and you nick the bed. same goes with birds, dogs, cats, etc...Didn't know their horns were filled with blood inside.
Closer you cut towards the end, the less likely they are to bleed.
