Which Malkoff drop-in?

That's very useful information.
It looks like the 5000K M61W would be the best choice for me. If it's 4000K it's probably to warm.
These drop-ins are not really cheap.
For me I can add 25-30 % tax/custom and then $35 shipping if I buy direct from Malkoff, mayby a little less from oveready.
I would like to play with my light a little before I buy the drop-in, maybe I like it as it is. My guess is that I will not.
It's the 80 lumens version and I recall that I have seen somewhere that it's quite blue, could that be correct?

If I buy a M61W this or next week, would it be the 5000K version or could it already be the 4000K version?

Edit: Just saw your last post Tandem, as you said, we are traveling in similar circles. And my MH-C9000 is expected tomorrow, lets see (hear?) if I can hear it...

I doubt you will like the SF P60LED. :green:

Malkoff Devices may be out of the older 5000K tint, but I would very much recommend contacting Electronguru - there is a good chance that his stock of M61W's are still the 5000K version. This is your best bet IMO - Dan is very familiar with the XP-G tints and will know what he has.

I think oveready has cheaper shipping options. If I am not mistaken Mr. Malkoff only ships via UPS (someone please correct me if I am mistaken).

I'd prefer US Postal Service myself, as here in Canada often relatively low value shipments arriving via post go through customs without duties being levied.

UPS I have found ends up costing more as customs fees are always levied in that case, plus they like to charge their own pound of flesh too for filling out forms I am perfectly willing to fill out on my own.
 
Among other things, I've ordered what I believe is the 5000K version with a note to Dan to confirm. (only a few left)

Let the waiting begin!

Hmm, well, I got in touch with Dan @ Oveready, and it sounds like his current stock are the newer 4000K versions as well. Well, I thought that there was a chance at least, based on the M61W description on the Oveready site, sorry ...

Sorry for the confusion everyone. There's a number of changes happening here. Let me back things up and give a bit of context.

Before the advent of 'non cool' LEDs, everything was cool. Anything warmer than cool was warm (two point spectrum). And so it was with Gene's early variations. The M60 was cool and the M60W was warm. But it really wasn't, M60W's and M60W MC-Es are much closer to neutral. Since then, we've gotten more sophisticated with our tastes (and options), creating a three point spectrum:


cool - neutral - warm​


When Gene released the M61W, he kept the two point name spectrum, but changed the W standard to 5000K (slightly cooler than neutral). Enough complaints came in that this was not warm enough, that later M61W's were changed to something in the low 4000's. But they were/are still called M61W.

Sounds like whats needed are three models/colors. I'll do a bit of study tonight and reply to requests/emails tomorrow.

I have purchased a Hound Dog and a MD2 camo with the M61 from Malkoff and both were shipped USPS priority mail.

Thanks for that info, I'll definitely check with them about USPS shipping to Canada. I have my eye other Malkoff goodies that Oveready doesn't carry including some options for 2xAA that I'd like to have winging my way at some point.

We ship everything by USPS Priority Mail (domestic) and USPS International Express with tracking and signature confirmation (foriegn). We have learned the hard way to ship this way. It can be costly, but we only charge what it costs us.

All of the W's currently in stock are 4000K.
 
Thanks Gene for clarifying that for me! At least the USPS costs are known up front, they are what they are. With UPS the recipient never really knows what additional costs they'll tack on for cross border shipping... I avoid them like the plague!

(Edit: I discovered how I got the impression in the first place, my fault entirely as I misread post #1327 in The Malkoff M61! thread - the writer there was discussing the shipping policies of a Malkoff reseller, not Malkoff Devices itself. Mea culpa, sorry for the OT distraction on shipping in this thread.)

Tandem, you didn't go for that m61W in 4000K?

I have checked the tint charts linked from Selfbuilts post:

The TK20 is if I'm not wrong a 5A tint, that should be around 4200-4300K.
In my eyes LD40 looks whiter and brighter (I think that one is around 4500K) but the TK20 still has a nice tint.
Some people percieve the TK20 as ugly yellow but I don't.
So I think that if Dan can find a M61W that is around that it would be fine with me.
Anybody has a TK20 or Q mini 123 NW or P20C2 NW and also a M61W (the newer 4000K) and wants to compare?

No, I didn't, I elected to switch my order to a M61 (no W). Had the M61W still been of the more neutral output I'd have loved to pick that up instead.

Here's two comparison shots M61 vs M61W, which according the author look a little cooler and a little warmer than seen by the human eye. This would seem to be the M61W with the 4000K output - a recent purchase.

Because of that (and some other comparison shots on CPF) I opted to err on the side of cooler given the current supply of M61 modules.

The light this module is going in will see heavy use; I'm completely comfortable that it'll be a good performer no matter what the tint appearance turns out to be.

I'm also quite confident that the Malkoff maxim "you can't stop at just one" will apply in my case in time too. If Gene comes out with an M61N I'll be keen to get that for other lights. Same goes for an M31, as sometime I'd like to configure an AA-compatible host with an M31 "N" or an M31W if stock available then happens to be a "N" in practice.

OverReady has M61N that Gene made for them. I have one, it's just as they say, in-between M61 and M61W. It's a very nice medium warm, nothing like the current run of 3700k of the M91's, I'm not sure of the color temp specs though. I like it whatever it is!:grin2:
