When I was a lad we were taught ride a bicycle against traffic. Why? Because car versus bicycle that's why. We did not have eyes on the back of our head so we used the ones up front. We didn't wear helmets, half the time we didn't have brakes, but we also knew not to ride places where cars zoom past you.

My state requires you to ride with traffic. Your ears can be your rear eyes but often times by the time you hear something it's too late. My town has a one ear covered law. A police officer can ticket you if you have both ears covered (or plugged by ear buds). Generally they don't.

Everybody I know that rides a motorcycle says it's not if but when you'll crash it. Usually through other people's error.

It helps if street riders also ride dirt. I have been down more than few times in dirt, but only once on asphalt. #1 rule; Always ride defensively and constantly look for an escape hole. There is no #2 rule once you're dead
