It's not on all the lights. I have had 4 rotaries, only 1 had the noticeable "gritty" feel. Only counter clockwise too.

Regarding the use of right hand and turning the tail cap, how about holding it on the tail cap and using the body to alter the brightness levels.................just a thought to try, could be way off! .

Yep, I tried this. No big deal to just squeeze the tail cap with my pinky. But I don't like that the light is pointing up when I do this. The natural transition is to (overhand?) flex wrist down so light is pointing out, with thumb facing forward aligned against the barrel. This works, but I really like the hammer grip, with thumb on the clicky against my chest. In the hammer grip, light is pointing down, ala the issue I described earlier. And hammer grip is eas(ier?) transition to cigar style. In all fairness, this is just my personal observation and opinion, basd on about 4 hours worth of fidgeting with the light. Quite possible that regular Rotary use would reset my HDS muscle memory.

I was doing these finger gymnastics last night, totally focused, and didn't realize my wife had walked into the room and was staring at me, amazed (disappointed??) that I was practicing spinning a flashlight around in my hand, turning it on and off, over and over, and had not yet gone outside to move the sprinkler like she had asked.

I'm a geek, and spend way too much time on this kind of minutiae. Forgive me.

The older Rotary mechanism used the 7 fingers (photo above) while the most recent uses 3. The "feedback" or "Gritty" feel has only been noticeable on the newer 3 finger mechanisms. I hadn't experienced it for some time then I was obviously cursed by someone on here and my main carry light became like an old TV knob changing channels back before remotes. Taking it apart helped and now it is smooth again (I do NOT recommend this... Send it to Henry if it is bad). It's not a guarantee that the issue won't come back though. Personally, I don't mind it unless it becomes very pronounced. Still, the next mechanism should have that issue fixed as many HDS customers suffer from severe OCD! LOL! I'm more a beginner at OCD. Either way, would prefer the buttery smooth mechanism of days past.

We did recently make the tail switch a bit harder to push, but because of a few complaints of it feeling "mushy" we have gone back to the stiffer more easily pressed extended tail button. The thought was to help prevent accidental activation... but that is what the electronic button lockout is for... so...

I was asked how to remove that contact board so the button can be replaced.

Proceed at your own risk. By doing this, you void your warranty... and it actually isn't hard to tell when a tail has been taken apart without the right tools. Henry being Henry will probably still fix it, but at a price.

This is what you didn't see in the previous photo. The contact board is epoxied to the retaining nut. This is put into the flashlight with the custom tool on the left.

Here is a closeup of the retaining nut without the contact board. You can see where the teeth of the tool on the inside line up with the notches.

You can use a thin coin to try and unscrew the contact board with retaining nut in order to swap out the rubber switch button. Be very careful if you endeavor to do this. You may want to file down the edges of the coin to get a better grip. The retaining ring is aluminum, so...

Oh, and don't do this to my pass around light! Hogo will become very angry, and you wouldn't like Hogo when he is angry. LOL!

Thanks for that.
I think mine must be an early one as there is no nut, just the board with notches on the edge.
I'd better not go there.

Taken with iPhone 6, default settings. No idea about WB, but it accurately reflects what I see.

thanks for your candid first impression on the Rotary, and the beam photo, well done!

here is more info about the way our brain adapts to the ambient light, and how that changes what color different Color Temperature LEDs appear to be at different White Balance settings IN OUR Brain

Im glad you found an LED that works well for your needs.

Hogo has done an outstanding job of sourcing exotic High CRI LEDs in a wide range of color temperatures, to suit different peoples needs and preferences.

Yes, you can see the button through it.
I'll open it again and look for the plastic nut, I'm probably being thick.
P

Put the coin in the center hole where you see the button. The aluminum retaining ring is right under the contact board. The board is epoxied to it. Around that inside hole are 10 small indentations that the teeth of the tool fit in. You can get a thin small coin to grab two of them on opposite sides. Just go slow and take it easy.

Light shipped to BigBurly today.

thanks for the update
so that was 5 days ago, but, who's counting?

since there are still 2 guys in front of me, it seems I definitely will not have received the light in time to decide what to do about the brass run this friday... hmmmm

Instant Gratification HDS, nope, thats an oxymoron

Enough already. :sigh: I am getting so tired of getting complaints about you and your snarky, snide, rude, condescending posts. And I'm tired of having to close threads and trying to mop up after you. Final warning... one more complaint and you'll be given a month off.

Jon do it, if i had the spare funds .it would not even be a 2nd thought. Worse case(and highly unlikely) you dont like it, you could sell it within seconds!

Life happens. Things don't always go (and in my case, rarely ever) as planned. I'm assuming this goes for most people as well.
Jon asked to be taken off the list for now, so I have done so. I let him know he can add himself later if he wishes.

When you get the light Bigburely912, play with it... errr, I mean evaluate it just like the OP states. No worries.

For anyone wondering, the light should be in my hands today. USPS had a snafu and got it stuck between two regional distribution centers and then for some reason sent it to the lower east side of hell in Kentucky. (I work there sometimes, its bad.....guess thats why they named it hazard!) then BACK to the wrong distribution center where it sat for two days, and then it finally hit my regional distribution center.
