Picking one light only

The EagTac D3a is what I carry with me every day. I just upgraded from the D25a, which I have carried for years. The D3a is very bright, is not noticeable in the pocket, and uses a single AA battery. It covers probably 95% of my needs. If you had to have one light only, it needs to be small, bright and use a common battery. The D3a is perfect. And it's a nice looking light.

that's easy
1 x AAA Maratac M-L-H REV5, copper head + Lumintop copper tool body with clip + a few Eneloops with a solar charger
(like the upper one)
My current one is with the stainless steel head.

I couldn't do without my Olight S30R Baton III.

Got mine in October last year, and it's been my EDC ever since.

Got the Peak Eiger (Nichia and QTC) a while ago and really liking it. Don't need a big light anymore and this seems to do all I need, especially very low output for night time travel.

I have the same thing in my pocket as a back up, except it's a black one.
It's good knowing it will always turn on in an emergency. I use eneloops in mine as I don't trust Alkaleeks.

Agree. No alkalines in this light. I am using Energizer Lithiums.

Have thought for a bit on this well-worn but fun question.
For me, it comes down to 'fuel-flexibility' & the inherent reliability of a modular design, so:

Surefire 9Z; 3xCR123 body - maximizing capability while (barely) still pocket-carryable.

Three LED dropins depending on the application & battery availability:

  • Malkoff M31N - can be paired with 2xAA Eneloops (or in an emergency, 1xCR123 plus a 2-cell spacer)
  • Malkoff M91N - supremely reliable & reasonably efficient; an excellent pairing with 3xCR123 primary cells.
  • Oveready V.5 Triple - multiple modes plus maximum output: minimally compatible with 3xCR123 on the high end, but normally running 2x17500 or 2x18500 for 2500+ guilt-free lumens. On the low end, off-the-charts efficiency & runtimes with either CR123 primaries or LiIons.

One. Single. Light. ?!?!

My McGizmo Haiku w/ AA body and AA converter and Nichia 119. Classy and beautiful, but tough and perfect in hand. Can run on Eneloops happily, Lithiums for cold weather or alkaleaks in an emergency. Excellent tint and color rendition, moderate output for most EDC tasks.
