Yup - doesn't work as voltage is too low. Interestingly, CR123 primaries when exhausted in a Mag-Tac stiil have plenty of oomph for other CR123 lights.
I, too, am much impressed with the L1, and may add the L2 (which I need not at all). I'm not sure "high" in the non-tactical mode is identical the the tactical "high" (not quite as bright), but both high settings are still crazy bright.
It does feel noticeably lighter and less substantial than its incan predecessor but it's actually a very nice and useful light, and not "cheap" feeling. The 3 brightness levels are easily accessed and offer ideal choices.
I emailed Maglite Customer Service to ask that question and their response was that all rechargeables will shorten the life of Mag leds. Their rationale is that rechargeables maintain a constant voltage while the alkalines (which their lights are designed to use) do not. Does this make sense to...
Surefire Customer Service advises that Surefire is looking for a different manufacturer, and that the replacement rechargeable batteries would be available on the website although unsure when. My guess is that inventory supplies were erratic.
Surefire tells me that all new models now display a much warmer tint to improve color rendition. Personally, I preferred the older and whiter tints (think 6P LED, etc).
I wouldn't be surprised if Surefire uses different manufacturing sources. Interestingly, the Surefire batteries which I bought from Surefire during their Christmas special have different packaging and appearance (black rings at collar and tail with plus and minus signs indicated, etc).
Gene Malkoff ships his lights with BatteryStation batteries and I have found no difference between Surefires and BatteryStation. I suspect they are all (including the Surefires) actually made by RayoVac.
