While I'm happy with a Sony handy cam and illuminator, I can't help but notice that those who use a 3 inch screen and a small camera and lense on their scope get better night vision quality and distance on all the vids I've seen. Anyone know what I should be looking for in regards to the camera part? The YouTube vids I have seen seem to have better quality picture because the camera is better for nightvision than the Sony nightmode.

hi mate, getting a decent camera is only half the problem, I use the KPC-S190-SWX bullet camera in a carbon tube fitted on the back of the scope, the camera is held in place using a 20mm cable gland, now as for illumination for air rifle ranges and upto 120yrds use a WF 501b torch with a oslon black IR droppin and you will see everything , Dave G in the PW site will build you one of these,,hope this helps,, Evo

Any color camera is going to be inherently crippled in terms of IR pickup, even the ones that have night mode. It used to be a mechanical removal of the IR filter, so I will assume it still is. Unfortunately, only the RED pixels on the sensor, which is about 1/4 of them, will be sensitive to IR. Add in with the small pixel sizes these days and you have low overall sensitivity. Best bet is a black and white security camera without the IR filter which will be much more sensitive hence why others seems to have a much better setup.

I have to wonder how good scopes are at transmitting IR, a dedicated lens would be better, but then you have alignment issues. As evo pointed out, put enough IR light on the scene and it becomes less of an issue.
