Mostly the light has to fill a need of mine, if I don't have a use for it I won't get it.
After that criteria is met the light must be:
Reliable
Efficient
Simple, Clean UI

1. Use AA or AAA Battery
2. 300+ Lumens
3. Lasts at least 3 hours
4. Light weight
5. Under $60
6. Strong and durable

Don't buy many lights then huh?

It must blow anything in my current lineup away for the same price as what I paid a few years ago for my current equipment. I don't endlessly pay for tiny incremental upgrades on anything. I buy good stuff with the expectation that it'll last NOT "a lifetime", but long enough to ride out all the "incremental improvements" until the improvement factor gets large. Then I upgrade and either sell or give away (or KEEP) my old stuff.

Excellent warranty from a reputable and established company
Rugged and durable under all conditions
Preferably shock resistant via potted electronics
Very water resistant
Simple UI with properly spaced levels (if not a single level tactical application) -must have a low low moonlight mode-
Reliable switch mechanism
Less moving parts = better
Quality components
Preferably made in the USA
Must fill a niche that is not currently being fulfilled by my current lineup OR must do a much better job than the light that is currently filling that particular niche.
If a pocket light, must have a quality, strong clip such as a McGizmo, Mac's, Prometheus, Moddoo, etc...
Must be able to tail stand
Must accept rechargeable cells
Must have efficient driver and respectable runtime
Emitter tint must meet my specifications, avoiding angry blue, pea green, **** yellow, etc...
Fully current regulated if not a direct drive light

1. No PWM
2. Clean beam
3. Unless it's a keychain light then it must have a XM-L (preferably U2) or newer emitter.

It has to be unique, or be a "must-have" light (i.e. something flashaholics would want). There's more to my criteria, but I think the bottom line is, I want to collect as many flashlights that I will be interested in as possible.

Re: What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight?

Money....

I got none, problem solved :(

I haven't bought a new light for over a year, since my bussines went under...

And that's the main reason i have stopped being so active here, i love lights, always have since i was a kid and seeing all the latest and greatest without being able to afford them makes me a bit sad.

Still my main criteria would have to be size, since i live in the city i don't have a need for big lights, although i do have a couple, i mostly use my keychain light and i want it to be as bright as possible without it having a 2min runtime.
Best one for me so far has been modamag's Draco, small light with a massive punch and i have yet to see anything out there to surpass it. Only draw back would be the "custom" rechargable cell's it's using.

Re: What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight?

A good UI will make me buy a light - I'm considering a Sunwayman V10R Ti XML. I've decided I like notchy wheels better than Jetbeam's infinitely variable ones.

Real ultimate POWAH!!! will make me buy a light. I have an Elektrolumens Blaster-NG (Blaster-SST?) now, and I've been taken by surprise by how easy they are to feed. D cells are convenient.

But when I got here, I asked for the impossible. "Fits nicely in my hand, slings lumens like a 60 watt incandescent lamp". I've had it riding on my hip for the last year and a half, with a Surefire G2Z and a cheap XML dropin. I am spoiled. It will be hard to impress me much further.

Right now, the easy way to do that (and, consequently, get me to buy something) is with design. Not many designers really make me lust for their product. I'll likely buy a McGizmo PD next, in a perfect world - he succeeded where many others have failed.

I've been looking for a good EDC light recently, so:

1) Uses easily accessibly batteries (AA/AAA)
2) Compact size
3) Decent flood
4) Good runtimes
5) Atleast 100 Lumens

My must have is that I want it :)

Seriously, reliability is paramount to me, which is why I often buy surefire, and I do like having two modes for an EDC light.

Ok I'm adding one more criterion to my original two.
3. It must work when I get it in the mail.

Re: What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight?

1. Good tint, can't stand the green or strong blue tints.
2. A medium/low, level with good runtime that will take me to dawn if needed. Not just a .3lm moonlight a 15lm to 30lm output for an all nighter.
3. Size and Weight must be reasonable, the giant throwers are cool but I'm not taking one with me when I am out where I need a light.
4. A sensable UI that does not get in my way ( I"m not a fan of lots of modes, 2 or 3 levels is fine with me)
5. A decent price point, $100 is a lot of money for a flashlight most of mine are in the $40-$70 range.

Re: What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight?

1. Reliability. If it doesn't work every time as per package instructions, I don't want it.

2. Durability. If its a light that must be taken care of, micromanaged and babied, I don't want it.

3. Efficiency. Got to be as efficient as possible at the price point, per lumen output.

4. If multi-mode, SIMPLE UI and a low low low.
