I am not surprised they have different names. And for all I know, I have been using the British words. I know I mistook the fascia for the rake / barge boards earlier in this thread. Here in Norway there are even different words for the same thing, and not even the professionals can decide on which word to use.

Also, I have had to Google translate so many words in an attempt to accurately (-ish) describe what I have been doing. Hence being fairly image heavy to cut down on the need for words. ^^

I am not a carpenter, and there have been much work within that specific trade in recent months, I sometimes have had to research even the Norwegian word to find whatever I have been looking for...

But even that has been fun, learning new things. :)
...Though with all the hassle it has been, actually getting it all done, I want to forget it as quickly as possible, because I DON'T want to do it again. ^^

As for the barge boards (sorry, I don't think I will go away from that name now), we have pretty much decided on...is the term really "staining"?
I know lacquer, varnish, paint, oil, wax...but staining...

Our old boards were painted white, and I think - since these new boards are pressure impregnated, whereas the old ones were white, untreated wood - staining is the best option. Maybe we'll have to do it more often compared to painting (as staining is mostly to add moisture to the wood to preserve it, as I understand it), but that's okay.

Original plan was to keep the boards as-is and let them go the typical grey. We have settled on White, like the old ones were. That will make a nice white line between the black roof and the yellow house. Won't be until at least next summer though.

If I may offer a suggestion, it would be to use a deck & fence stain. It seeps into the wood, lasts longer than paint, and won't peel. I used the same product and color on a fence at home and on Mom's first floor deck.

The brown spots are from the neighbor staining his side. I was very happy when the green stain covered the brown without any bleed through.

With a prolonged blackout recently, I spent some hours outside working some more on the driveway while there still was light.

Closing up the right side of the entrance stairs, and building the framework for a privacy wall above and boarding up underneath the...I wouldn't call it "terrace", but perhaps "quick access outdoor storage". This is where I will place a lot of nets with firewood once winter closes in.

Don't have photos of the most recent changes, but I have moved gravel up against the board I have screwed on at the bottom.
RIP all of the sheet stone I lay down back in 2016. They are now all gone underneath a weed barrier and gravel.

Follow-up to my post above. We are close to closing up for the winter.



I don't have the materials on hand to finish the entrance the way I have planned, and without a trailer (and I don't want to bother my friend for just a couple boards) I can't practically get the dimensions I want (local shop only has a very limited selection). So I'm just putting back the temporary solution I had last year.

Expecting 2000 Liters of firewood to be delivered Soon™. 50x 40 Liter nets. Will place as many as I can fit on the...I don't know whether the space beside the front door is large enough to be classified as a "patio". Using an assortment of pallets to keep some airflow underneath the nets, as I know the snow will find a way up there. I will close the top half with a tarp handing down from the roof and secured in place.

And I am almost done with the new storage in the garage. The hooks, boxes and other accessories for my peg boards arrived on Monday.

Been going through 3 boxes so far, with years of accumulated everything.
Tons of various screws with Philips head that will go straight to recycling. Some hinges I remember using back in 2008 The factory screws for my car seat that I replaced back in 2013. Etc., etc.

Got some more work done today. Installed the wiring loom, but no connections made yet. The previous owner welded a flat blank plate to the bulk head without any holes, so I had to bore a hole to feed the wires into the engine bay.

Also installed whatever coolant hoses I had on hand.

Lastly, I test fitted the intake and carb. Because of that flat bulkhead plate, the intake manifold couldn't really sit flush against the block without tipping the engine forward. So I used a fender hammer and made a bit more clearance; however, the air filter doesn't fit. I was thinking of getting a foam filter so it can deform a bit as needed.

Left hand drive. The chassis can support both right and left hand; just the steering rack would need to be replaced and master cylinders for brake and clutch would need to be moved along with the pedals. Pretty much everything else is identical, with the exception of the length of some hoses and lines.

A CA friend went through a Mini phase and had 3. One was the pickup version, and another was RHD. As fate would have it, it was the RHD model he tossed me the key to and said 'here, drive this'. I wasn't about to let a little detail like that deter me, so I cleared my throat and said 'sure'. It was an experience. To my surprise, I acquitted myself pretty well, never missed a shift or crashed a gear, and didn't hit anything - just don't talk to me while I'm doing it;-) It required every last % of available bandwidth I could muster, but I did it, but if he'd asked me my name while I was shifting, I couldn't have answered it:-) Fond memories.

That’s really cool! The pickup version (I heard) drives quite differently than the saloon; I’m guessing due to the how the cab and bed affect how the shell and subframes match up.

I remember in my younger years, I was on a trip in Ireland and for some reason I decided to rent a manual RHD car. Going straight was manageable, but turning usually put me facing oncoming traffic!

Probably not in the spirit of the thread, but this thread inspired me to upgrade the wall mounted emergency light in my room in the basement.

I love the wood, I love these speakers, but that white-hairy thing (whatever it is) from your speaker will vibrate and you might hear the vibrations on louder volumes. Also, some acoustic treatement in there would help a lot, at least in the corners behind the speakers (e.g.: white sheet covers rockwool), given that wood from the room has its own sound signature, which might differ from speakers signature.

BTW, I love this house and what you did inside!

Thank you, but I can't take any credit for the inside of the house (at least not this room). That was my father's doing, I was just along for the ride at that time. :)
I just "took over" the room when I grew older and needed / wanted more space, and this "basement living room", initially intended as an alternate room when having guests, was never used.

I really had to study the image regarding the "white-hairy thing" you referred to. No worries, that is just a fibre-optic UFO lamp. I got one on the other speaker too, for decoration.

You're right, the speakers used to vibrate, but they don't do that any more. If you look closely at the bottom of the speakers, they stand on rubber casters. I did that to easier move the speakers around, but it turned out to be perfect for cancelling out the vibration too. And yes, the lamp did move around from the vibration on louder volumes. It even fell off the speaker once.

There have been plenty of conversions to a modern I-4 as in Honda engines; few have been converted to RWD. If Gildred Racing is still doing it, they stick an Acura V6 in the back seat and convert to AWD. Z-cars also had a one-off dual Yamaha R6 powering the rear wheels on a classic Mini. I had considered making mine powered by a single R1 engine in the front, to the front wheels, but opted for the classic engine and setup.

Have a look at Sam's YouTube channels Look Mum No Engine and Look Mum No Computer. He's done some fun things with old Minis. A couple of companies made complete fiberglass bodies that are longer on a steel frame to make them into a sort of Mini minivan. His current main car project is doing a vintage hotrod project with a New Zealand built, aluminum bodied Austin 7. He's also made an aluminum cylinder head from scratch on a manual milling machine for his other Austin 7. Sure he could buy an aftermarket aluminum head to boost the compression ratio, but where's the fun in that?

Initial plan was to cover myself up and use a vacuum on the area (Karcher WD4 dust-evac, purchased specifically for the dirtier jobs) come the summer, but Google and everywhere else said "do NOT vacuum the remains of a mouse nest!!" [insert multiple, various, and serious health hazards!]. So I just sterilized the area...prior to a vacuum come the summer.

And considering all the blue showing up under UV before I started, to all the dull grey when I was done, I'd say it was the right choice.

Yeah, vacuuming-up urine and feces from a rodent's nest wouldn't be my first thought. Hanta virus concerns, and other similar nasty pathogens.

Good call on anti-bacterial and general cleaning, before ever touching the vac.

Shout out to all the moms and dads out there who implored us all as kids, to not eat the dirt, to wash our hands before meals or touching our faces, etc. They knew what they were talkin' about.
