How's The Weather There ?

Well, darned if I didn't speak too soon. Was wistfully watching the last of our ~60 degree days disappearing, just this past week. But had to actually say it.

And, wouldn't you know?, "Murphy" was listening. (We all know who "Murphy" is. He's the "bad messenger" for Mother Nature and all that lot.) Dared all the gods to not be listening, and who was right there listening? Murphy.

And now it looks like it will be in the 20s-30s for the next week at least. Just had to open my big mouth, didn't I. Yup.

Lesson: Mouth meet Foot.

I swear. I just had to tempt "Murphy" and all the gods with those earlier remarks.

Sure as sunshine ... and on the coldest day of the year? What happens? My car's heater blower has failed.

Of course it has. Had to be. After that razzing of Murphy and challenging the alignment of the stars. (Will begin to go through the various checks of fuses, voltages, wiring, though quite possibly the old blower motor itself will need to get swapped. We'll see.)

Shoulda kept my big mouth shut. Yeah.

Homer Simpson was a prohpet. He knew. "D'oh!"

No snow! But 20-degrees F. with howling winds.
Went outside during my 3rd Shift job to put my empty YETI water-bottle on my backseat. Just a few yards away. Wearing a very warm Commando sweater.... Nearly passed out and fell due to the blast of constant Arctic wind. First time literally in my Life experiencing that! Didn't think that was a thing. Thankfully made it back inside before that happened. Space heater underneath the Security desk. I tossed on my Watch cap. Cranked the heater up to the highest setting for over an hour. Cooked my left leg in a desperate attempt to warm up because of course, cheap as Hell building owner isn't going to turn on the heat for "only" Security personnel in the building.

Yesterday morning, at around 3am, the wind chill was -30F (yes, minus 30)
we have a tons of snow and ice, with the arctic blast over the weekend, VERY WINTERY!!

So glad I pulled the pin and invested in a new furnace, has to be one of my best decisions.
To 'hope' my old furnace would have worked would've been a dangerous assumption , a dangerous assumption

I didn't have a functioning furnace this year until Nov. 24th,,
if I lived in Arkansas, that wouldn't be an issue.......Wisconsin is different 🥶

I heard they wrestle bears for fun

Yesterday morning, driving home from work during the still raging snow-storm, there were at least two times I lost traction, maybe even three or four. Maybe a couple of days out of the entire year All-Wheel Drive becomes a necessity in NYC. But when it does, you're going to wish you had it. I can see why Toyota decided to make AWD an option on the latest version of their iconic Corolla model. Thankfully, I know that trick where you apply just a bit of gas, while quickly turning the steering wheel back and forth a few times, rapidly to gain traction.

IOW: "Missed it by that much."

@orbital -- I've got an older HVAC system. It's coming around time to needing an update, in the next couple/three years or so. If I might ask, what did you put in?

Pocket warmers. Get some. They work!

I prefer the Peacock (Japanese) catalyst pocket warmers. The Zippos aren't as good but will get the job done. Fill them with Zippo lighter fluid, heat the catalyst up until it lights off, then enjoy warmth for the next 12-24 hours. Putting them on the inside jacket pockets or hand pockets of the jacket feels almost like having central heating and keeps your whole body nice and warm.

For space heaters, get a radiant heater! Best for spot heating. One of the offices I had was kept at 55F all year 'round...which absolutely hurts when you're walking in from 97F temps outside. I became quite the connoisseur of space heaters in the 15 years I worked there. For whole-room heating there, the older-style coil + fan heaters worked far better than the ceramic heaters. At the condo I normally am at, I've never turned the central heat on in 14 years now. Just a single Vornado TAVH10 heater does the whole place. The cool thing about these is they throttle up / throttle down the heating elements & fan speed. based on need. I don't know the amount of discrete steps, but it feels like there are at least 8, so it's always running and heating.

@orbital have ya checked out what that unit can do by setting the thermostat past 55? Go on. Live a little. Crank it up to 60. 🤓

lol__😜

You'd be surprised what you get used to,, cost me nothing to wear extra clothes, not a penny.
I'm sure my thermostat will go up to 80F or something,,, have it at 58
Let's say the wind chill is -5F and I go inside after snowblowing,, my house will feel nearly 65F warmer!
I can work with that

I use two comforters, one real down, the other like a Thinsulate.
Just last night I was slightly too warm.

crom,, layering only works if you finish with a shell layer that's not insulated,, your insulation is your layering & it's less bulky (you don't want bulky)
Often called 'foul weather gear' or 'shell' that goes past your azz and zips up high on your neck.
Waterproof and breathable is best,, if you want to save some, just waterproof
Have at least one EXTRA wool/polyester blend hat,, sooo important.

Unfortunately I wasn't gifted with one of those highly-adaptable bodies. 🙁 Even when I was young it didn't handle it well; it's not gotten better with the health issues over the years.

My body only works well in a narrow range, even more so when it comes to dewpoints. Also rather unfortunate that I live in Florida. The heat and humidity kills me.

Well, later today the parts come in. A new blower motor assembly and a couple of relevant fuses. We'll see whether that does the trick. The heat's still leaking out of the vents, sort of, and the heat turns cool when I adjust the dial down. So, looks like the HVAC is still working but the blower motor tanked. By tomorrow I'll know.

Of course, tempting all the gods (and "Murphy", the little rat), the next day it'll be temps in the twenties and threat of snow. Time's a-wastin', the clock's a-tickin'.

Hopefully, the fix will work. And it won't be the flip-side of that argument: as in, "The fix is in" (due to bad part, my busting a fuse when installing it, or whatever).

If it works: well then, ol' "Murphy" can go suck an egg. Yeah, baby.

How's that for tempting fate. Livin' dangerously. Bring it on.

EDIT: parts came in; got the new blower motor installed; works just fine. Murph, I got a couple of eggs lined up ... just for you.

😁😎🤣
