Well, the charger is ... not great. I wasn't expecting much, for sure, but wow it feels flimsy.

We'll see how the batteries perform....
Yep. Same experience. Charged them up and put one in the Muyshondt on my Keychain. Used it a bit when the power went out in the office. I'll post that in whatcha use it for today thread.

I use a slug to make up the empty space for charging my 10180’s. Sorry if I can’t point you to where you can get them. I got them in a trade
 
A little late to the game, the lowest I have ever gotten light out of a cell was a sofirn C01, 0.4v.
I dug up an old ARC clone that I haven’t fully tested yet. It will light up at 0.6
When the light went out the cell was at 0.3 with no recovery.
Still need to test its lowest voltage on start up.
If I could find a C01 or an E01 I’d jump on one. I imagine there are a lot in junk drawers that are way less useable for people in comparison to what is available now.

I had two, but sold one a year or two ago. As someone had mentioned in the thread previously, I had been using the one I have as a cell drainer. But I found a lot of pressure built up in the tube when the cell was exhausted, to the point it was difficult to open the light to remove the cell. Also a loud pop when I got it open. No more cell draining duty for my C01.

I have either the CWF Micro or the 4Sevens Preon on me daily. Charles Wiggins of CWF boasts that the Micro puts out 650 lumens. With a fresh 10440, It just may do that for the first minute. The 4Sevens Ti Preon is from 2010 and is still a contender to 2026 AAA lights. The Preon runs well on any aaa/10440 cell.

Not hardcore, but I do prefer single AAA for EDC. Weekdays is a Surefire Titan. Weekends is a Fenix E01 V.2.
 
You know what's an underappreciated AAA? The Eagtac D25AAA. They come in a range of emitters, and make lovely beams.

Though, if they removed the magnet, it'd be a bit shorter, and almost a perfect pocket light. Due to the magnet, I don't carry them around, but I DO leave them around the house, magnetized to door hinges (so I can have a light handy in most any room).
 
A Browning AAA light was my first attempt at getting something ideally compact and bright, and that specific light LED me here to the forum. Probably bought and gifted at least 50 Fenix L0D and its subsequent derivatives before starting to really delve into the Arc and others.

I've been mostly an HDS Rotary user for probably about a dozen years now, but I always dream of going back to nothing but AAA lights once they've made enough progress in UI, brightness levels and runtime.

Glad to see threads like this still keeping the interest going.

This is why the next big jump in flashlight technology may come from battery research.
LED's and lithium-ion batteries have created the current wave -- let's say 1995-2026 -- of miracles. LED's and lithium-ion batteries made possible new outputs and runtimes that were never possible with incans and alkaline batteries, or even NiMH.
LED's are getting close to the theoretical maximum output for lumens/watt. They offered an order-of-magnitude improvement over hot wires, but no new technology is going to offer the same jump over LEDs. (Maybe we're around 50% of theoretical max now, so LED's have a little room for improvement. But the improvement will be only a doubling, at best.)
Lithium-ion batteries are small, light, and power-packed. But there is room for improvement. And there is a lot of research on batteries right now, for good reasons. Battery tech is going to be part of the picture of moving to an energy-abundant future with solar, wind, and other alternative-generation technologies coming on line.
So, there's a lab somewhere right now -- it may be in Amsterdam or Shenzhen or Boulder -- where someone is cooking up a new chemistry for batteries that are even more energy-dense, can pack more watt-hours into a smaller, lighter package.
Come back in 30 years, and AAA-format lights may be able to do what CR123 lights can do now. But until the battery tech changes, AAA-format lights are not going to be able to offer enough output or runtime.

(And by the way -- the new batteries, with even more energy density than lithium-ion chemistry, may also be some scary little beasts. We know that lithium-ion cells have the potential to cause burns, shocks, and booms, much more so than pokey old alkaline chemistry. Any technology with higher energy-density, and the ability to release it on demand, may be that much touchier.)

That's a really weird sentiment because CR123A batteries are so bad, and disposable, when I think 99.9% of the people here are probably using Eneloops. The cost of operation for an Eneloop is dang near free.

Fundamentally, "Enough" output or runtime is entirely subjective. I EDC AAA lights, and never feel like anxious about my capacity or output. With a good TIR, their output is pretty good. Fundamentally, versus an AA, the AAA gets to the same voltage, but you're sacrificing a lot of runtime for compact size.

For my daily use cases, though, that's fine. I don't know if I've ever left a light on for more than a few minutes in all the years I've EDCed one. If I'm doing something that requires an hour or two of light, it's generally not a surprise, haha.

At worst, I run it dry, and spent maybe a penny to recharge the Eneloop, so I'd say I'm actually kind of wasteful with my EDC, haha.

Well that’s the paradox, right? High energy density means more lumen-hours in a small package. But it also means more boom packed in your pocket.
