Are Surefire Flashlights Outdated?

I enjoyed a small, but growing, collection of Surefire lights in 2010. But then they changed their name to Suefire, and were dead to me.

I sold all of them except the G2 (because it was my first high-quality light), the G3, and the orange 6P. Does anyone want either of those two?

Do you mean the orange and yellow/green lights? I like the way those look. LOL

I do like that g3 and the orange 6p, lol...no use for either though, unfortunately. If that g3 were a g2 and the whole thing were that safety yellow, though...

Really interesting. Is your Tactician one of the "early" or a "later" model. I was buying the Tactician when it was available. Don't ask the year, I do not remember, but the light was fresh on the market...

And in general, my "outdated" Kroma MILSPEC with (I guess 45lm) is still 45lm and I still use the light, and it does the same good job as always since.... 20 years or so.

Outdated does not mean it is JUNK
Outdated does not mean it is usable anymore

Most lights I own are "outdated".... :)

Oh, you got to keep one of them as a back-up. Heck, my new beater watch came in. Then I found my old one behind a drawer. So now I even have a back-up beater watch.

My first might've been one of the earlier models with 6 slots around the head, a few months after release IIRC, the replacement has 8 slots around the head instead and i'm guessing it was released around a year after the first one? It's hard to keep track with the warranty stuff considering i don't know if the replacement was fresh off the line or one of the first production run at the time.

Yeah...I've seen that. I was wondering if the material might have had inclusions that cause that kind of chipping when manufacturing...I imagine that it might also come from just getting tossed into a box after being machined, so it's possible the threads get beat up...but that looks like something snagged the thread an peeled it off, possibly not enough cutting fluid?

Looking at it i'd say less inclusions seeing as how the rest is good, maybe cutting fluid if they're doing it in one go or it could be something as simple as wrong feed rates or wrong tool to cut with.

Came in just to chime in that my U2 Ultra is still kicking after 2 emitter changes and has been transitioned to camping duties. Can't fault it, it's been a workhorse. Battered and dropped, with a couple light outputs no longer working (hall sensor?), but it still has it's appeal.

I have a couple Sofirns that completely blows it out of the water output-wise. Surefire needs to update their emitters and drivers to at least match what's available on the market.

.... I think I have a L2 and L4 somewhere in my collection.

I own one SureFire that looks like that on the far left of your pic. The only model ID is Sure•Fire on the tail cap. IIRC there was an extension tube, battery, and bulb upgrade option but the compact size fit well on the belt.

It was a present a couple of years before retirement and it was a revelation. It was a second light as Streamlights were the issues light and required as approved safety equipment.

Compact, simple to operate quickly. It had a nicer pattern than the Streamlight but was tough on batteries so it was used sparingly. The tailcap switch was a game changer. It's utility left the Streamlight in the pocket often.

From time to time I think about doing a Makoff upgrade, mostly out of sentimentality. I've got a few newer lights, mainly from Fenix. Retired, flashlights are a small hobby. But I've kept the SureFire.

Congratulations on your retirement. I hope you're enjoying it to the fullest. Me, I love being retired. Don't know how I got anything done when I had a job.

I have a Surefire C2 and M2 both with 3rd party drop ins, one is an EagleTAC ? though they
dont seem to be available here anymore and the other has a SolarForce drop in, both were
using rechargable 17670 cells but they to seem unavailable, though someone mentioned 16650
cells so have ordered some of those, in all they have fallen behind in my use of flashlights considering
batterys, runtime, brightness compared to the new Nitecores P20iX, SRT7i, MT2A Pro and
LoopGear SK05 PRO MAO amongst others I have, I do love how the SureFires look and feel but to me
the perfomance feels dated compared to newer lights, if there were newer drop ins available
here with a bit more oomph in performance then I would perhaps use them again, as of now they sit in
there original boxs as a reminder of what was.

I started this hobby about 1990 and it was some exciting times. Surefire survived some hard economic times and a pandemic and are still in business today. I would say they are not outdated.

I think the company is nearly 50 years old, I bet they will be around for many more years.

You can find really god drop in with the latest LED technology, check out Malkoff, Sportac, Lumens Factory etc. Most of the time you don’t need thousands of lumen. A Surefire with a new drop in work very well in most situations.

While reading the thread titled "Dealextreme drop in for G2, 6P, etc???" I started making a list of the drop-in's I saw. It got a little out of hand. :sssh:
I thought I would put the list out here instead of buried 10 pages in to the above thread (no offense to the guys and gals in said thread :wave:)
