*Second* EV fire in a Korean parking garage this week. Fortunately this one was caught early enough to save the structure and cars in the garage.

This time a Kia which was charging at the time of the fire.

For their sake, I hope they had insurance. If insurance covers it, then they've been set free from owning a crappy car!

It depends on a country, but normally It s not the Hyundai owners insurance that has to pay up, not even kia's insurance, cuz it was not an accident, it is direct result of car's malfunction, so it is KIA that is liable,
I'm pretty sure that Hyundai is over 10 years old, almost no one pays for full coverage insurance on such an old car.

Mine is 18 years-old, and I still pay for full coverage.
Used to have basic on my previous car. After having to do and file all the paperwork myself on a couple of accidents, I'm more than happy to let an insurance agent take on that work the next time some idiot hits me.

Took a deeper look in the news. Apparently the elevator man passed away a month later in the hospital. We've essentially seen him die.

Now I'm more careful than ever. The swollen battery on my old previous phone is looking more worthy of disposal than ever before. Time to back it up and bin it.

I store my lithium batteries in my oven when they're not being used. Don't worry, the circuit breaker's turned off on it and anyone who would be using my kitchen knows to empty the oven first.

I actually have 1 bloated phone sitting in there right now as well. I need to dispose of it, but haven't had the time to get over to the local shop which will take them in that state.

Made me instantly recall the true story of an individual who secured a major loan from the bank. I think it was to revitalize his failing business. He ended up taking the loan in the form of cash. Needed a safe and secure way hide it in his home. He hid it in the oven. His wife was a lazy cook, and according to him; never used the oven. They ate out or ate sandwiches. Or, used Chef Mike (the microwave) all the time. So he decided it would be a great hiding spot until later in the day when he could tell her about the loan. He left, she came home.... and for some bizarre reason decided to actually cook that night. So without looking inside, she turned on the oven to pre-heat it.

All the money was burned up. House nearly burned down. He went to the bank to explain what happened. Bank was not amused.

That video only referenced that there was speculation it was lithium ion batteries. After seeing a few of them ignite personally I can say the first fire with the white smoke does not appear to look like a lithium ion fire, the smoke would be much blacker. There are reports that say one of the containers was carrying some class 5.2 Organic Peroxide cargo. These can be very unstable especially in heat as they tend to be strong oxidizers. Quite often they are used in the manufacturing of explosives. Given that the vessel was headed to the middle east I would believe there was a possibility the cargo was not declared properly and was in fact intended for terrorist acts. This is just speculation though.

Wow, this is a scary thread! I just remembered old cell phone batteries that I need to get rid of. I'm having really bad vibes about all my lithium battery devices. I know I haven't had any incidents, and many people use them all the time everyday (like I do) without incident. But when something does happen...it is really bad! It is like playing Russian Roulette. That car that was in the parking garage for three days, then POOF! Time bomb. Again, it makes me worry about my devices. We are so vulnerable.

That elevator video shocked me. I was surprised he survived for a month, I figured he would have died right there in the elevator. How he survived the elevator is beyond me.

He survived for a month? I tried to find out what happened to him. One of the accounts said there was a pile of ashes in the elevator. It stinks that he survived the fire but didn't make it.
