Anyway, I'm of the camp that if we use ~4500K for streetlight and also use high CRI (which further increases apparent brightness for any given lux level) then we can in fact light streets less brightly without impacting safety. And the lower the light output, the more easily it is to prevent light trespass into people's home, which is another common compliant about some streetlights.
In Florida they've codified streetlight colour temps since LEDs became required:
Roads:
<35 mph is 2700K or 3000K.
<50 mph is 3000K
>55 mph is 3000K for nature areas/rural
>55 mph is 4000K for suburban/urban roads
Highways:
All speeds is 3000K.

I do have to say that some of the new LED lighting solutions they've implemented have been well done. With LEDs being discrete illuminating elements vs. big glowing bulb, they can aim and focus the light output and precisely control light cutoffs. On the new road lighting projects, it's amazing how well they've done this. There's no hot/dark spots on the roads between lights. No glare. Pretty impressive.

In snow, you want as low CCT as possible. I LOVE my 519A 1800K flashlights for my late-night walks in the snow. I've spoken about this earlier, but the 6000K glare and reflections you get in snow is absolutely horrible. And ice is even worse.
I don't know if it's still practised today, but I do remember certain European countries having yellow headlamps on cars, notably France, for that reason.

To me snow is one reason NOT to have low CCTs. Yellow light on snow just looks awful, like a bunch of woolly mammoths all decided to take a long p*ss. That said, I'll grant 6000K is too high for any type of road illumination. 4000K to 5000K seems to be the sweet spot in terms of maximizing peripheral vision/depth perception while keeping glare manageable. Don't get me started on those 8000K+ headlight modifications. Those serve no real purpose.
As far as the 65K Lumen goes, I have a LOT of loss with the Amber filters. But it's worth it, because I am still outshining even most trucks. Effectively, I have 4 pods (Rigid D-XL Pro Driving) in a wide cone for ~150 meters of 180º flood lights. I drive a lot on narrow, twisty gravel roads, with lots of animals (anything from moose to mice), so I want light shining also in the ditches and well into the trees on both sides for personal comfort and safety. And with a recently upgraded LED-bar (Lazer Triple-R 24 Elite Gen 2) on the roof for a fairly wide ~500 meters of effective light throw forward.

On an open area, I'd say I get at least 20 seconds of response time from seeing any source for caution in those 180° in front of me. Doesn't sound like much, but when it's otherwise so dark you can barely see the front of your car from the driver's seat, and the factory lights gives me, say, half that time and only for forward obstacles, I'll gladly take that expense again.

I've been living under 5000K lighting in my home for decades. First fluorescent, and now LED. No cancer. I think cancer is caused mostly by environmental pollution. That includes exhaust emissions, car interiors outgassing, some of the food we eat, etc. To me the entire premise of blue light causing cancer was used by people who just don't like whiter light. When they saw the majority preferred it, they had to invent reasons to get rid of it. Sadly many of our legislators bought it hook, line, and sinker, perhaps because they also disliked whiter light. I tend to think once most of the boomer generation dies off we'll go back to whiter streetlights. When I talk to younger people they usually tell me the yellower LED streetlights are just ugly.
Fun fact though: some of the street lamps on my commute has light sensors (others have timers) for when to turn off or on, depending on the sun.
...When I have come close to such street lamps, I am shining so much light on them, they have turned themselves off. ^^
🤣 This is actually kind of funny. I wonder how many CPF members are using such bright light sources at night that they cause the sensors to turn the streetlights off?

I'm glad I don't live in Florida. Having seen 2700K or 3000K streetlights here I hate them almost as much as the old HPS ones. At least NYC left the 4500K ones on major arterials and highways. I'm going to write to DOT and explain the rationale behind using 4000K to 5000K streetlighting in terms of seeing and safety. And also the reason for choosing high CRI versions which minimize any blue spikes if that's really a concern. I would love to see how a street looks lit up with maybe 4500K, 95 CRI LEDs with properly implemented cutoffs and light focus. And also with the intensity reduced to just enough to see well.

This is the most important thing with LED streetlighting, not the CCT. Make sure light goes only where you want it. Make sure drivers don't see the light source itself, only what it illuminates.

It is also a question of the amount of illumination - and I am at the point where I have arguably too much light on my car, so I have to use filters to reduce it. I wanted White lights + filters to have both options. Without or with clear filters is better in the Autumn, as it's only partially dark in the mornings. At that point, I just want as much light as I can, with no benefits from the Yellow light. I had been meaning to take some photos, maybe a video, of my setup this winter, but I had some issues with my car during the darkest period. And when everything was sorted, it was too late to do what I wanted.

In case it wasn't obvious, I was joking about my "cancer car". This...news article, to really be generous, is not something I, or anyone else should, take seriously at all. Our default indoor lighting has been 2700K / 3000K for as long as I can remember LED-bulbs being an option. Callback to an earlier thread, areas with more sun tends to prefer colder CCTs, while areas with lots of darkness and long winters (such as Norway) tends to prefer warmer CCTs.

I'm thinking if I had designed this I would have incorporated both amber and white (high CRI white of course) LEDs. And I would have had the option to vary the output of each color. In effect you could dial in whatever CCT works best for you in any given condition on the fly.

Yes, I've heard as much about CCT preference, although I've noticed looking at the light color coming from windows while walking that more and more people seem to prefer what I would consider white light than even a few years ago.

And yeah, I don't take much of this blue light stuff causing cancer seriously. To be sure it may disrupt sleep patterns but so does the sun if you tend to sleep late like me.

The 1800K specifically is CRI 70, but something like a Convoy S21E is a cheaper intro than my current bed reading light, an Emisar DW4K E21A 2000K. The E21A 2000K is ~CRI 95 - and the Anduril Smooth ramping gives better output control, but at a higher price.

Not trying to say Amber light is the king of everything, but if you haven't tried it, please try either of those LEDs specifically on the bed before trying to sleep. I find them very relaxing. ❤️

And set at like 10 Lumen, a 5000 mAh 21700 lasts for MONTHS between recharging. My DW4K is magnetically mounted on a metal plate on a book shelf above the bed, and I don't move it / use it for anything else.

I'm curious if dedoming a 2700k will keep the CRI while making it slightly less warm than an 1800k...

While I love some good incandescent lighting, we went many decades with carbon arc, fluorescent, mercury vapour, metal halide outdoor lighting. If anything, the past few decades have had some of the warmest colour temp outdoor lighting ever.
They are ignoring the fact that LED's have a wide range of available color temperatures from blue to very warm and even into reddish color temperatures. Rest of the article is overblown too IMO and may be influenced by loss of revenue by energy companies due to the much greater light per watt that LED's have.

Regardless of how you feel about lower CCTs, they work better in snow, as the short wavelengths of blue light scatter MUCH more aggressively. Blue wavelengths reduce contrast, creates that classic "wall of light" effect from all the backscatter, and also scatters more within our own eyes. Bluer light enhances the brightness of the foreground, so the falling snow closest to our light essentially is all we see. Because of our sensitivity to blue light, these headlights are more fatiguing, trash any semblance of night vision, and the older you are, the more blue light scatters inside your eyes (which means both you and other drivers are more likely to be blinded by glare).

This is why fog lights are yellow. They illuminate further away, and don't create the "wall of light" effect.

Cities and states use nasty, high CCT LEDs because it helps them trample our 4th Amendment rights with all the cameras they rent with our tax money. Politicians are happier when the Crimestoppers screenshot shows what color clothing a suspect is wearing. Plus, because - on paper, you get more lumens per watt, they can sell it as being "green."

I've never been to the NYC area, but I imagine there's a miserable amount of light pollution, so maybe that's why you prefer cool lights in the snow? If there's just absolutely so much light that none of it really matters, I could maybe see the CCT being rendered essentially irrelevant.

I live in the Midwest, and I've NEVER met a single person (even the most diehard ice blue light lovers) who thinks they perform well in snow. They're just objectively horrible. Turning on your brights out in the country in the snow is hilariously futile, because it just raises the height of the wall of light, haha.

They're terrible on the streets, and a nightmare in headlights.

I'm not sure if you're old enough to have driven in the days of sodium lamps and halogen headlights, but driving at night, especially in the rain or snow used to be downright cozy. Today? Absolutely miserable.

Some of my fondest memories were of driving around in the amber glow of Chicago's street lights as a kid. As I got older, and started to drive, I used to love to go out in blizzards with the sodium lights, my halogen headlamps, and my snowtires on my compact car. Man...life was so good.



I think we SHOULD go back to amber. LEDs are kind of an efficiency wash compared to low pressure sodium lamps:

People complain about the 0 CRI, but one of the more interesting downstream effects of that the amber light essentially makes only light and shadow, so our brain can actually process the visual information faster, so it can heighten response times - which is very important in snow. Also, bugs are much less affected by amber lights, and there's not as much to scatter into the atmosphere, reducing light pollution.


And then, on top of ALL OF THAT, the high CCT lights mess with peoples' and animals' sleep cycles, which we're FINALLY starting to realize is actually a very real problem, especially in the U.S We're one of the few regions still wasting time with Daylight Saving Time (thanks, retail lobbying - because it increases store foot traffic like 2%...I wish I were kidding. We keep DST because of the retail and GOLF lobby), which cuts sleep by about 30 minutes while it's in effect, and we have so much more diabetes, obesity, etc. than other places, and sleep directly affects these health outcomes. It's just an overall lose-lose-lose.

It's the most American story ever; we change things, and it only becomes objectively worse, because out politicians are complete idiots and never use logic to make decisions.


Just for fun for anyone young that hasn't gotten to enjoy this kind of winter driving, 3M makes the 3700 OTG safety glasses in orange, and they AGGRESSIVELY filter blue light. The brightest blue headlights with high beams look only like meager, sad yellow bulbs half on. Halogen headlights look orange and cozy.

I got some of these, and I actually got the ENJOY driving at night in winter for the first time in....15-20 years? They're amazing.

If people want to use blue, high CCT flashlights, that's cool. But, there's very little actual logical reasons to use it in public settings and on cars.

Cars only have awful nightmare beams because one of those safety rating agencies started essentially measuring lux on a runway, and it's WAY cheaper to score "safety points" and increase you overall score by using cheap LEDs than, say, installing more airbags, crumple zones, and/or reinforcements. Car manufacturers have the gamification of those safety ratings down to a science, and it's usually cheaper to tailor your car to their tests, get a great score, sell more cars, than it is to make a car overall safer.

America runs on the McNamara fallacy. That's why everything is going downhill. We're "efficient" and "data driven."

That's mostly applicable to places where snow might sit around all winter. In cities and many suburbs the roads are plowed in a matter of hours.

Yes, I'm 63. I'm old enough to remember how I hated the sodium lights compared to the mercury vapor ones. No driver's license, so my only experience is piloting a bike under them Absolutely awful. No depth perception. I couldn't tell if a black spot on the road ahead was a pothole or just a slight dip in the pavement. The 4500K LEDs NYC initially put in were so much better. At least they left those on the arterials.

Personally unless you have an essential job to get to, I don't think people should be driving in blizzards at all.

0 CRI means no depth perception. Yellow light means poor peripheral vision. These are all valid safety concerns beyond the aesthetic ones. A properly lit street should have the same colors as during daytime, except of course at much lower intensity levels.

We really should try high CRI for streetlighting. For the "blue light bad" crowd this reduces the size of the blue light spike. 4500K, 95CRI puts out less blue light than 2700K, 70 CRI. It also increases apparent brightness at any given intensity, which means you can reduce the intensity to achieve the same overall effect. And lastly high CRI just makes things look better.

Agreed on DST but sadly the states that want to do away with clock switching want to keep permanent DST instead permanent standard time! As for messing with sleep cycles, there are lots of causes besides high CCT lighting. We have too many distractions. People keep their phones by their beds and check for messages all night. Not to mention without enough exercise you're not tired enough to sleep well.

The regulations should cover things like light trespass, proper cutoffs, and so forth. You want to light the street while leaving everything else as dark as possible. Requiring low CCTs when the science says this negatively impacts safety is a law based on feelings or preferences. It's not just that low CCTs make peripheral vision and depth perception worse. The bluer light coming from higher CCTs keeps drivers awake, which is something you want. I recall riding once and actually falling asleep for about two blocks. Granted I was very tired but the HPS lights made a bad situation worse. To this day I don't know how I remained upright and kept my feet going while I dozed off. It was sheer luck I didn't collide with anything.

Ick. The coolest you'll find around my homes is 4K, in garages and laundry rooms. 3000K-3500K is as cool as I'm willing to go in bathrooms and kitchens. 2700K or lower (tunable) in bedrooms.

Actually... Florida's laws were based on research, and cutoffs were part of the equation. On a section of US-41 I drive, they even tuned the lights to illuminate the adjacent bicycle path. Everything outside of the road surface is pretty much dark, except at intersections where they use different patterns to help illuminate cross-traffic, along with brighter illumination overall at the intersections.

No depth perception. I couldn't tell if a black spot on the road ahead was a pothole or just a slight dip in the pavement. The 4500K LEDs NYC initially put in were so much better. At least they left those on the arterials.

Personally unless you have an essential job to get to, I don't think people should be driving in blizzards at all.

0 CRI means no depth perception. Yellow light means poor peripheral vision. These are all valid safety concerns beyond the aesthetic ones. A properly lit street should have the same colors as during daytime, except of course at much lower intensity levels.

We really should try high CRI for streetlighting. For the "blue light bad" crowd this reduces the size of the blue light spike. 4500K, 95CRI puts out less blue light than 2700K, 70 CRI. It also increases apparent brightness at any given intensity, which means you can reduce the intensity to achieve the same overall effect. And lastly high CRI just makes things look better.

Agreed on DST but sadly the states that want to do away with clock switching want to keep permanent DST instead permanent standard time! As for messing with sleep cycles, there are lots of causes besides high CCT lighting. We have too many distractions. People keep their phones by their beds and check for messages all night. Not to mention without enough exercise you're not tired enough to sleep well.

Because we make laws based on feelings and not real data. Some of the streetlight laws like Florida's are a perfect example of this. The regulations should cover things like light trespass, proper cutoffs, and so forth. You want to light the street while leaving everything else as dark as possible. Requiring low CCTs when the science says this negatively impacts safety is a law based on feelings or preferences. It's not just that low CCTs make peripheral vision and depth perception worse. The bluer light coming from higher CCTs keeps drivers awake, which is something you want. I recall riding once and actually falling asleep for about two blocks. Granted I was very tired but the HPS lights made a bad situation worse. To this day I don't know how I remained upright and kept my feet going while I dozed off. It was sheer luck I didn't collide with anything.

This is that pedantic point that white and black technically aren't colors, but the presence of ALL, or the absence of ALL.

But, back to our brains, when I use a very warm CCT, my brain adjusts for that in a few seconds, and I can differentiate colors just fine. I have an NTG and FFL 1800K emitter in some flashlights. They are fascinating because, AT FIRST, things look orange, but then you VERY QUICKLY are able to differentiate most colors just fine.

And, remember, moonlight is fairly rare. There's only a couple days of full moonlight, so as humans, moonlight isn't our PRIMARY night time light source; it's fire. Fire predates homo sapiens, and so we've been co-evolving with fire (there's very interesting arguments that the shrinking of our digestive tract correlates to the adoption of cooking via fire, which then allowed us to rapidly increase the size and energy expenditures of our brains). That means, for humans, our PRIMARY light source for the entire existence of our species has been about 1800K in the form of candles, campfires, torches.

So, while you can say it "destroys" the beauty of the night, historically speaking, it is the only way to experience the night.

Being in the Midwest, driving in snowstorms is likely more common than in major cities, simply because things are spread out. It's quite easy to get caught in a storm during what would be a normal drive. Our weather is really unpredictable. So, it's kind of an inevitability that you're going to HAVE to drive in a snow storm. It sucks, but that's why half our population moves to the sunbelt, hahahaha.

You can try and talk to people about how halogen or HID headlights are far superior to 7000K AliExpress LED headlights, but they'll just keep going, "But, mine are brighter."

I also agree that lighting should be LESS INTENSE. I read once about how bright street lights don't ACTUALLY reduce crime, but just make people FEEL safe. Its kind of like the TSA. They don't ACTUALLY stop terrorism, but without them, no one would fly because people wouldn't FEEL safe.

Street lights create the shadows that criminals rely on to ambush people. So, you either need to fully light an area (just like during the daytime), or keep it dark, if you want people to ACTUALLY see what's around them.
But, good luck convincing the local Karens who insist they NEED to go jogging alone at night at 1AM, haha. "Feeling safe" is all they care about, and they will raise a huge ruckus for your city council if they don't get what they want.

Permanent DST would be such a disaster. It's funny, because when the US tried that in...1979? it was SUCH a disaster that Federal law actually BANS permanent DST, because they KNEW people would be dumb and forget how much of a disaster that winter was after a few generations - and, here we are!

I can appreciate the differing takes on FTL travel...one is more newtonian (hyperdrive propulsion) the other is more einsteinian (warp drive space folding). With less knowledge of the lore, I imagine that in the ST universe, their warp functions quite similarly to their transporter tech.

That's just not something us city dwellers experience all that often. For us it makes more sense to have light which works the 360 days when these conditions don't exist. Besides that, every time we have enough snowfall to have lots of blowing snow, there's usually a travel advisory. And as you may know, the majority of NYC trips aren't by car. Indeed something like half of those who were born here and are still living here don't even have driver's licenses, me included. Most get around through come combination of walking, cycling, subway, and bus.

This works only within certain limits. I can't adjust at all to anything much under about 4000K. Everything looks yellow and I can't differentiate cooler colors. This is why I've despised incandescents from the time I was a kid.

Technically speaking there's also the Kruithof Curve. Low CCTs only appear whiter at much lower intensity levels which I would never use anyway. I prefer things fairly bright, as in 1,000 lumens or more for an average-sized room. My workroom is 7'x11' and lit up with six 5000K, 93 CRI LED tubes producing about 10,800 lumens. With the mostly white walls and ceiling this is even brighter in practice than it sounds.

Granted but starlight is always present and that's much higher CCT than moonlight. Also the peak sensitivity of scotopic (dark adapted) vision occurs a bit above 500 nm, which is in the cyan area. In other words humans are adapted to see better by starlight at low light levels than by any other source. This is why I say higher CCT sources make more sense at night BUT they don't have to be blindingly bright. I tend to agree too much of night lighting is way overkill. If we insist on high intensity for "safety", then perhaps dial back the streetlights after a certain hour when most people are indoors for night (10 PM?, perhaps an hour or two later in busy cities like New York). That will also keep people from not sleeping because the outdoor environment intrudes inside their bedrooms.

We've been co-evolving with fire but not long enough for adaptations to have taken place in our visual system. That type of adaptation takes at least many hundreds of thousands of years. Besides that our scotopic peak is in the cyan region. Had an adaptation taken place it would likely be somewhere around 600 nm. I think it's more accurate to say humans simply got used to firelight, as opposed to evolving to see better under it. I can hardly see well with firelight at all. Blues completely disappear. Greens are muted. I think of firelight as more a mood light than anything which is great for actually doing tasks.

All politicians see is that high CRI is less efficient, although now we're only down to about a 10% to 15% penalty between 70 CRI and low 90s.

Halogens and 7000K AliExpress specials are two extremes which both have serious flaws. You need to be able to differentiate between darker shades of blue and black in cities so as to not hit pedestrians. Halogens aren't all that great in this area. 7000K is just ridiculous also. The advantages of higher CCT disappear once you get above 4500K to 5000K. No reason for anything higher other than for people to say my car looks "kewl".

As a night person I can't tell you how much I hate the DST creep we've been seeing. This is despite the fact I set my own work hours and can wake when I wish. I'm somewhat attuned to the vibes of the world outside. When everyone else wakes up an hour earlier, it tends to shift my schedule as well to earlier hours than I would prefer to keep.

Well, if they're driving then obviously they're not sleeping. Blue light may be keeping them awake but blue light isn't going to make them decide to go out and drive if they're not tired. Blue light will keep anyone driving at night more alert which is better for safety. That said, much of this may be moot within a decade as AI makes human driving on public roads illegal. At that point no need to light roads at all. Cyclists will have their headlights. Cars will only need headlights bright enough to be seen, not to actually light the road ahead. You'll still need to light sidewalks in cities. This can be done with much shorter fixtures with much better light control. The sidewalk will be lit but everything else will be darker than now. AI driving should be a boon to those of us who prefer darker nights.

If you want to fall asleep I don't disagree that fire is superior. Any orange or yellow light tends to put me to sleep.

Yeah, I'd say we mostly agree, and I would STRONGLY agree that a neutral, high-CRI, low-intensity lighting scheme would probably be appreciated by everyone.

I'm a "Boomer Millennial," and it's insane to me to see how much the light landscape in the public space has shifted since I was a kid.

When I was growing up, I could look up and see most of the stars, and enjoy seeing the streak of the milky way. Now? I can't even see all the stars in the Ursa constellations if I am in the same areas.

Honestly, I kind of wish we'd use no street lights and just encourage people to use flashlights. I've been really impressed with how visible pedestrians and cyclists are when they're using lights. Plus, imagine how much that'd help with the light pollution...
