Which version of the AA MDC has the fattest hotspot?
I'd argue the TIR equipped FFL ones have the widest hotspot, but it's also diffused, so it's got soft edges that bleed into the spill, which you may or may not like.
If you don't want that, then I'd agree with
@ilikeguns40 , and go 519A.
Yeah Dons stock sapphires are also 5 lumens. Single mode. They are nice, however not my cup of tea. It’s too bright in the middle of night and not bright enough during the day. I’d rather see a high low with a 1 lumen low and a 20 Lumen high of some sort.
Yeah...I have both CCTs of the Sapphire, and it's a very nice light...but, in the middle of the night, I reach for my MDC AA because the low low is perfect, and the Sapphire IS too bright...Also, the MDC AA tailstands... If the Sapphire COULD tailstand, it might be helpful to put on the counter while I'm taking a leak, haha.
With such a low CCT, it is likely going to feel a bit dimmer...
From what I hear, the sapphires are basically indestructible. That's worth something to a lot of people. And the beam on these is excellent. I'd probably use one on my nightstand for that reason.
They are well made, and the beam is nice. BUT, it's relatively short range (think "arms reach") and it can't tailstand.
It's not the past anymore. You want indestructible, you have numerous choices nowadays. From numerous brands. Peak LED Solutions, most Nitecore models, most Fenix models, heck you have SureFire that even back in the day were tough as nails if dropped, right along with Peak mentioned above.
Speaking of dropping.... It's thin, small, it has a small twist head to switch it on, and is lightweight. This thing is not meant to sit on a nightstand. You wake up in the middle of the night, you reach for it. You're groggy, you're still sleepy. It's dark as hell. You're most likely going to knock it over and have it roll around on the floor when you reach for it. Hey, just being realistic.
Yeah, again, I have two Sapphires, and they are very lovely, but I have...half a dozen or more Peak Eigers.
The stainless Eiger is absolutely indestructible, too. I EDC one. Plus, I JUST got a pair with LEDs I sent in; SST-20 in 4000K (normal Eiger head, and then in both a normal and diffused Ultra head) and 3500K 519A. Then I have a 4000K 219B head I got from
@ilikeguns40 , along with two of his old 5000K 219B Ultra heads (normal and diffused). Even the stock, high CRI, warm Cree emitter is very nice (probably about 3000K).
The Malkoff MDC AA is the ultimate nightstand light. I think the Peak Eiger is the ultimate pocket carry light. I'm still looking for the niche for my Sapphires. I don't regret getting them, but the wide beam means they have like zero throw, and the low output isn't firefly/moonlight, but doesn't have enough throw to really see the ground clearly (I am on the taller side, so maybe that's a me issue).
Honestly, the Sapphire might be the perfect light to hang on a bookcase. It'd be PERFECT for searching through your spines, to find a book, and to read with if the room is a bit dim. It really does excel at creating a wide, soft, even beam that makes it easy to read things (when lights with throwier optics would creat a lot of harsh reflections).
I'm more interested in why the super low runtime, lol...5 lumens for 5 hours then another "15 hours on moon"...The average alkaline AAA should be pushing at least 80 lumenhours, even with a warm white emitter...
Yeah, this is interesting. I guess I don't know if the normal Sapphire does the same thing. Does it start brighter, and move to a lower low as it tapers down?
At 25mAh draw, with an Eneloop AAA being 750mAh, that SHOULD be 24hours of output...so, I am confused a bit. Is it 5 hours regulated at 5 lumens, then a taper?
I'm going to spend some time thinking about this Sapphire, and if I want one.
I think I'm still never going to heal the emotional wounds of the M31NLLLL or M31NLLL existing. That's the single most disappointing thing, ever. I had DREAMS of an M31NLLLL in a Malkoff Maglite Adapter, running at 2.4V on my 2x 10 Ah NiMH Powerex D-cells. DREAMS! DREAMS OF ENDLESS LIGHT! Shattered and crushed...
Strong men also cry...
