I have two Kosen MDC AA's with FFLs emitters; 1800K and 5000K, and yeah, they use the TIR. I think the TIR actually looks nice. Of course, I prefer Don's reflector, generally, but I don't dislike the TIR beam because it's VERY even with the diffuser film.

I think I like the NTG versions more than the FFL (though my FFL 5000K is pure white and I need to check out the NTG 5000K still), but I also don't like things too rosey. For what it's worth, I find the 519A seems to technically have a better CRI, with a more neutral tint. The NTG emitters are pretty close to neutral, though the 2700K NTG35 is very nice, and noticeably more red than the 519A beam. The NTG35 4200K is very nice, but when I compare it to an SST-20 or 519A in 4000K, I end up strongly preferring the yellow beams to a slight rosey one. I might just get another D3AA with one of the NTG emitters, just to have something to use it more, because I do like them. Meanwhile, I DO like the FFL emitters, but do NOT like that Firefly no longer does anything in AA/14500 (and their lights are ugly, in my opinion).

I think the other issue with the FFL/NTG ones, is for the 50 die size, it's apparently 4 different emitting plates, so it has a lot of artifacts, while the 35 series dies are cleaner, since it's just the one.

I kind of think some of the SFT emitters would be neat to see from Kosen. The SFT-40 in 3000K is fantastic (I have a Sportac with that), and I wonder if the SFT-70 in 3000K would be cool for higher voltages. I think an M61WT and M91WT would be pretty cool, haha.
An SFT-40 in 3000K in an MDC AA could be fun, too. My Eagtac D25A is pretty nuts with the SFT-40 in it. Sucks through batteries, and titanium has trash thermals, so...fun for short bursts.

Yeah I’d like too see some cooler 519a models. I’d like to have a 5000-5700k AA MDC.

NTG are nice, I’ve only experienced with the FFL351a emitters, I tend to like rosy ones but they do offer neutral versions and there are a lot. The issue with FFL is not all are the same. The ones JLhawaii use and sell are the ones to get, I recently got a reylight 2700k FFL pill and it looks so bad. Very different from the ones Jackson sources

Are we talking SST-20 levels of yellow? The rosey ones look odd to my eyes because I'm more used to a yellowy sunlight.

Haha, you’re a different breed man! Yeah you’d probably like it, it’s much stronger yellows than the SST20

I generally don't do 14500 MDC lights, so I don't accidentally fry one of my MDC AA's, but this one is probably going to sell quick.

Did anyone ever get work of why in the world Nichia discontinued their best CCT 519A?

You’re definitely missing out on the li-ion MDC. That 700 lumen outdoors is very nice

I try to keep Li-ion for my "other size" Malkoffs. I'm just really worried about accidentally slapping the wrong cell in one of my AA lights, and roasting it.

It's funny, too, because the first Kosen was supposed to be an M61N in 4500K, but a goof make it 3500K (which is very pretty). I shrugged it off, was happy enough, and was always like, "I'll get the 4500K when they redo a run," and as far as I know, that never happened.

I did get one of the 4500K MDC AA's, though. It's really fantastic.

But, just to make everyone boo me, I actually still prefer my SST-20 MDC AA. I think the bin I have on that is maybe the FE3, because it's maybe the single most dead-nuts neutral emitter I own in any light. It's absolutely my gold standard I compare everything to. Not that I dislike the 4500K 519A. That's probably my second favorite emitter....which they discontinued -_-

I have to say, with as fast as the 4500K MDC AA lights sold out, a second run would have been sweet.
I'm guessing they chose this for the fact that it's the new programmable UI, for people who want maybe that ultimate grail light in 4500K.
I feel like there's always a lot of options for Li-ion lights, so the MDC AA runs always seem more unique (plus, I love that mode spacing).

I haven't tried the new programmable UI, though, haha. I am going to have to ponder on this one.

I've been researching this and have a big headache. Malkoff lists the tempered glass lens kit as 26.4mm x 1.6mm. The stock lenses are listed in two different sizes, 16.5mm & 22.3mm which adds to the confusion. Looks like it will probably come from overseas but I prefer quality.

This is for fun, wanting to try it out. Anyones experience with these glass lenses is appreciated.

I can't help, as I tried and failed. I ended up with the Malkoff tempered glass lens on mine, and it's just excellent. The 16.5mm & 22.5mm lenses are old MDC & new MDC/VME (feel free to correct me), so 26.4mm is what you want. Quality ZWB2 filters are extremely expensive, and sizing is a problem. I'll watch to see if you're any better at this than I am!

One as potential trading fodder to maybe help me to someday obtain an MDC AA HCRI-45 1-2V flashlight (my grail), and the second will most likely move over to 16650 (2CR123) power. Just trying to enable..., You need this as a 16650!

I, too, have been contemplating the 16650 route.
MORE FUN? 2xAA body with double LFP cells (I think it goes up to 9V, so you could even do 2x14500).

Yes, and although I would much rather see SM453 emitters be used to build more AA 1-2V flashlights, a unique offering instead of a repeat is the Kōsen way, and I can’t fault that.

As for mode selection, I’ll stick with the default L-M-H, as the only other mode group that I would tend to use would be L-M, and that is absent.
