Things I've learned the hard way . . .(Part 2)

Have learned this lesson awhile back, but the other night at my 3rd Shift job, I got a reminder of the following.... Sometimes it's best to just leave $#&% alone!

Bought a new belt a few months back at Wally World. D!ckies brand with a rotating cylinder on the front of the buckle, and an insane number of holes punched into the leather. This belt will fit ANYONE who isn't horrendously morbidly obese. Belt of many holes! No need to notch new ones in because of weight loss. Then, I started regretting it. Why? One time with a different belt, I popped off that rotating cylinder while tightening the belt. Underneath that cylinder was nothing! Just a bit of curved metal, top and bottom. That's it. Happened at work. Thankfully, yes I do keep back-up belts in the trunk of my car. So now, belt of many holes caused enough concern that I ordered a new belt. No-Name from off of Etsy. Apparently a custom belt maker. Turns out, just a scammer.

So the other night, I'm tightening my belt, and it snaps! No, not the leather. The buckle! The one without a rotating cylinder on the front of the buckle. Some of you might recall that is NOT the first time that an actual metal buckle has snapped on me from yet another different belt. Again, I was tricked thanks to pot-metal junk disguised as a brass buckle. So, I go out to my car (been wearing this Etsy special for 2 or 3 weeks) and retrieve the belt of many holes from the trunk.

Then I notice something.... The rotating cylinder has another inner cylinder inside of it. Obvious reason, to prevent it from popping off. Of course it does. It's from a dedicated Work Wear brand. For people who do actual physical labor, and need a dependable belt.

So yeah, the belt I was afraid would snap apart on me at the buckle, didn't. The one I bought to prevent that from happening, did! So, belt of many holes is back as my EDC belt. When I get a chance, going to make a special trip out to Wally World to get two more of them. Before some genius executive at D!ckies decides to discontinue it in favor of an "improved" model. Did I mention the Etsy special cost significantly more than the belt of many holes? Of course it did.
Take a flat washer and superglue it, that is what I did. Of course it will not rotate but saves the belt.

That's what Instant Pots and Hotlogic Minis are for.
I'd happily marry the Plainest of Janes if she could cook.
Meals that take literally hours to make.
And, that's not including prep. time.
I need me an Italian woman. Or, a Latina.

I'll reiterate, Instant Pots and Hotlogic Minis.

Prior to my dad's health issues last year, I was on the road 250-300 nights/year. That's a lot of hotel room nights. Eating out at restaurants all the time sucks and isn't exactly good for your health. 8 years ago a Delta stewardess got me hooked on the Hot Logic Minis. I still have my original from 8 years ago and still use it often. Prepping meals for it takes <15 minutes, often under 10.
Some uses for them here:

Beef Stew, 3 minute prep time:
Chicken & Rice, 3 minute prep time:
I've cooked all sorts of things, practically everywhere with these. Cars, clients' offices, hotel rooms, airliners. I even cooked a full traditional Thanksgiving dinner in a hotel room using 2x Hotlogic Minis and 1 Hotlogic XP. It was funny hearing people in the hallway and front desk staff talk about how good it smelled, wondering where it was coming from since this hotel didn't have kitchens in the rooms.
Did you know that you can bring fresh eggs through TSA? If you ever see some crazy guy in an airport making an omelet at the gate or in the airplane, stop and say Hi!

Likewise, the Instant Pot is a major time-saver as well. We use ours to do meal prep on Sundays for the Hot Logics during the week. Then it's just a matter of grabbing a container out of the fridge and slapping it in the Hot Logic to reheat during the week or on the road.

No offense, I'm Old-fashioned and skeptical of great food that takes only minutes to prepare. But curious enough to give those a try.

MREs are eatable but aren't tasty. Some of them are OK and remind me of canned food I had as a kid or the processed stuff that I no longer eat. (Of the couple that I tried anyway - ravioli and chicken stew? or maybe it was a pot pie thing?)

I haven't tried the ones that civilians can buy and keep in their basement for when the zombies come.

Never buy a new or used car in New York in February....

So yesterday morning, after the end of my 3rd Shift job, I'm clearing off the freshly falling snow from my car. Get to my windshield. Clear THAT off. And my Safety Emissions sticker is staring back at me. Oops! I messed up! Instead of a year and 3 days to get that taken care of, I only have 3 days (not including that morning). So, off I go, after work, while it's snowing, hoping my go-to location for small car fix-it jobs is open. It was!

Had I purchased my car 18 years ago on any other month of the year, I'd have 5 or 6 FULL days to get that test done. Not only just 3. NYS law. The month that you buy your car is the month you can get that Safety Emissions nonsense taken care of. Not any other month! You try going earlier, they'll tell you to come back on your assigned month. Going later than your assigned month is a bad idea. BTW, my car passed.

Congratulations on getting in under the wire and passing the test.

Two very different things I've learned the hard way....

1) If immediately after meeting someone for the very first time, they tell you what their pronouns are.... Smile, thank them for doing so, excuse yourself. Then never speak to them ever again. Trust me, whatever type of relationship you end up establishing with that person, it's not going to work out. If a new co-worker, severely limit your interaction with them as much as possible.

2) NEVER order a lone item from Home Depot's website if it comes in a box. They will take the box itself, slap on shipping labels, mail it out to you, then drop it off at your mailbox; where everyone can see what it is. Making it much easier to steal said item from you.

This is a disturbing trend that I'm noticing. We've received a few things recently that were simply shipped in the product's retail box, not a proper shipping box, and some of those retail boxes are pretty flimsy. One recent shipment had a close call with something heavy, but fortunately only the end of the box was crushed, not the product inside.
