I've been quite content with my stable of watches for a long time. Nothing else I've seen has made me want to reach for my wallet.

But funny thing... I recently decided that a budget-sensible, Casio, square-ish digital watch (somewhat along the lines of the classic Casio square watches) was one that I was missing and would enjoy.

I've never been one to quite appreciate the square digital watches and all the wording for fetaures and branding that Casio places all around the dial and bezel of many of their watches, so I looked for one that looks somewhat simpler.

So after closely considering the range of options, this is one that appealed to my senses. Casio B640. Been ordered.

I think I'm going to enjoy this, especially at such a low price.

While I would have preferred one of their all-steel watches, the pricing on those seemed a little crazy to me at present. But I think that I will ultimately spring for one of their all-steel models, at some future point.

The BULOVA is way cool! Did a quick search, and found the black Computron D-Cave @ Walmart for $349.00 and Amazon lists the chrome @ $228.99 and gold tone @ $264.99.

I ordered the blacked out version where the text on the dial isn't really visible to the eye - unless you know it's there.

While beginning this journey into mechanical watches I'm learning a great deal about not only the movements or calibres, the different tiers of quality, the types of watches, but also the history behind a number of brands. Movie watches. Railroad watches. Military field watches. Space watches. The most intriguing to me is the story of how a wristwatch was used to time a 14 second burn to make a course adjustment so Apollo 13 could get home. THAT is a watch I could get into! However, I don't particularly like the look of a chronograph. It's too busy. I gravitate to more simple dials. Before I try to set a goal to get an Omega Speedmaster I need to see if I can enjoy a chronograph on my wrist. In comes the $50 quartz chronograph (with coupon). I already took the cheezy leather strap off and put on my Maratac single passthrough.

The text is actually Tan...low CRI lighting...

Movie watches. Railroad watches. Military field watches. Space watches. The most intriguing to me is the story of how a wristwatch was used to time a 14 second burn to make a course adjustment so Apollo 13 could get home. THAT is a watch I could get into! I'm also not big on Chronos with busy dials.

I do kinda like the look of a bi-compax though (two dials vs three)

There are a few chronos which use a central minute register, which I really appreciate also. Unfortunately they tend to be pretty pricey.

The watches based on the Lemania 5100 have all been retired (like that Sinn and a number of others) , I believe, but you could get a modern Damasko DC80 for quite a bit less than a new Omega Speedmaster.

Ahh, simple Chronos & Chronos in general....

Damasko DC80, I bought it used on WatchUSeek for $1600 (but they don't come up very often - I have the "Destro"/lefty version)

And love my Hanhart, for simple timing the bezel turns both ways)

I used to be a Regular on there for more years than I can remember.
After Ernie sold the site, soon afterwards there was a mass exodus of members.
Too many changes, too much commercialism. I lingered on for a few more years.
The sale was about a decade ago. All the members who made it great, left.
I eventually did too. But still a good amount of knowledge on there.
(Once in awhile, I check back in.) Worth visiting for those who want to learn.
The Regulars in the Higher-end Luxury watch sub-forms are lunatics. Watch out.

Rocking the MK1 today.
I went round and round about picking up a Hamilton, couldn't decide between the Auto and the Mechanical, was leaning mechanical, but heard too many complaints about the keyless on them, so was hesitant.

Also, I wanted a proper "field watch". Something for working in the swamp, and I just wouldn't do that after paying Hamilton money. Not that they aren't worth the dosh, but I just ain't gonna beat on them.

Now, the real fieldwatch these days is a G-Shock, but I still wanted something w/ gears and whatnot, just because I lean that way.

After a lot of thought and rumination, I ended up grabbing a Timex.

Auto, shorter lugs than the Hammy, 40mm is my sweet spot. Nice historical provenance. The price was right for something I will actually use in the elements and not worry too much.
But what really sold me was the sweet acrylic crystal they use.

Lookit that sweet dome.
Yeah, it scratches easier than Sapphire, but a bit of polywatch polishes that right out.

I'm pretty happy w/ it.

I have figured out what I don't like about a chronograph. Not being able to easily see the hour and minute hands at a glance. The Timex is a perfect example. The black background, tan text, and white hands blend the background to the foreground. Making it difficult to spot the hands with my old eyes. Y'all have given me some things to look at though. Watches with more contrast. As I move foreword to try something else I need to seek the contrast or two extra dials instead of three.

This is the sole chronograph in my collection. I went the bi-compax route as well for better legibility but it is still the least legible watch I have. I love the design, though. The pic is not my own wrist. Professionals are so much better than me, especially in managing the reflections.
