Why do you like flashlights?

While there are lots of good reasons, like how useful they are as tools, I've often wondered what the fun appeal comes from.

I think there is something similarly fun about some other tools/toys: guns, and RC planes/cars/whatever.

It's the ability to do something here, that has an effect over there, that I think is a major component in the appeal.

I have no idea, and am also trying to work out why I've suddenly become obsessed with this hobby.

I don't even need them for work...

Anyway, it's fun!

They give me a sense of security plus I've always liked flashlights since I was a kid, so my lights double as a "boy toy." Because of my lights, I'm always looking forward to the next power outage.

I've always had a fascination with knives and have a reasonable collection of high end pocket knives. A lot of people in the knife community are also into lights so I saw what people were carrying on the various EDC threads on other forums.

The more lights I saw and the more threads I read, the more I realised that there's a lot more to it than the mini-Maglite I kept in the car. Pocket flashlights with hundreds of lumens?! They made the 25 lumens from my keychain light look a bit feeble by comparison. Plus there was a whole world of new terminology to learn and master and that appealed to my geeky, boy scout, be prepared frame of mind, so I set out to learn more.

Because I can't afford to buy 23 cars instead of 23 lights

Or 23 watches... I've been bitten by the flashlight bug for the past 8 months, and have built up a collection of 6 nice lights. All of them together cost less than one "affordable" watch!

Flashlights are a very useful tool, and I loved playing with my flashlight as a kid when I went camping or night fishing. Shining the beam up to illuminate the trees, seeing the beam of light when it was foggy or muggy... Hadn't had one for a long time, but a power outage last winter set off a web search, leading me to CPF and to a new hobby. On the bright side (pun intended), since I've been into flashlights I've sold off most of my watches and no longer spend much time on watch sites.

I think the internet enables these kinds of collecting hobbies. It is nice to be part of a community online, and it makes it easier to research all the various models, options, and technologies available. People post reviews and pictures, and that drives demand for new flashlights (or watches, knives, guns, whatever...). Without the internet you might see a flashlight in a store from time to time, but might never run into someone with a flashlight collection to introduce you to what is available.

Without the glorious Internet, I'd be perfectly content with my $50 knives, and even cheaper lights.

Now I'm slumming it when I leave the house with a $220 knife, and a $70 light. ;)

But. Yesterday, I was carrying a Rh xm 18 with custom ti scale, a amber inlay Crk 21, and a custom ti light, to work, stopped and thought......... Why?

I guess the same reason why people like rolex watches, and a ferrari

Today, I couldn't wait to get back home to trade back to my good stuff lol.

Once we get a taste of the high quality lights, we become spoiled by the having the best. That's why I like flashlights. Well the kind of flashlights that we prefer. Because I like to carry quality made things.

I enjoy having the ability to see into dark places anytime I need to now. I can think back into my life at a time when I didn't carry a light on me. All the times I wish that I HAD a light. The flashlight is an invaluable tool to me. I always carry one until technology allows me to have night vision installed into my eye balls!

Once I understood how flashlights could be used for self defense, I became very interested in them.

Still trying to sort this out

I collect a lot of stuff and knives were one of my biggest obsessions. Of course when you collect knives flashlight pop up all the time. I was at a swap meet and picked up a surefire 6P for 5 dollars. I started reading up on how to get an led into it and found a drop in that worked pretty good. From there it has been all downhill from there

Glad there is a place to support my latest obsession and people who like to share theirs as well.

Aside from my portable knives collection, I am also really happy to collect flashlights with different style and quality.

Because it is one of the most important tools for survival. I felt the wrath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) last November 2013. I had used an ol' Maglite then (5D) but it was cumbersome to carry at times. Hence now I am here...

It is probably because I can't see well in the dark and tends to bump into things (seems to be worse than others). Nowadays, flashlight designs are pretty 'sexy' and flashlights are pretty affordable as a habit.

I don't! I hate them.
I have marital stress because of them, they cost too much, and I can't stop buying them!
Just like knives!
Damn hobbies.

Ever since my older brother introduced me to the boogie man as a child, I have always needed the best flashlight and batteries a kid could find. Now, I have kids, and I am the boogie man! Albeit, a boogie man with a bright light!

Also, I see some folks that are new into lights checking in here. If you are a tight budget, I will give some strong words of caution. STAY AWAY FROM the 4 "T's" Tmack,TITANIUM,TRITIUM & TAIN!, LOL Trust me! Things goes down hill way fast! But there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel, usually you will sell 4 'normal" lights to fund the enslavement that the 4 "T's" can bring! Why?? Because they are awesome & addictive!!!!!!!

Don't believe me, just PM Tmack and ask about the Tmag! He serves up a truly mesmerizing blue beam of "awe"! I can't get enough of the Tmag!

Enjoy the hobby!!

i got into batteries first. i was interested in the big, silver-colored, aluminum flashlights the local police used to carry. they usually came to visit (my mom was a nurse that usually patched them up, my grandmother was a chef that usually stuffed them during their shift), and let me play with the lights, but i always took them apart, to check out the batteries. i was 4-6 at the time. i used to go in my mother's purse when they gave her one, and take it apart and play with the batteries doing some experiment i used to see on mr. wizard or some other science show on tv at the time. i do remember finding leaking batteries a lot. Then i got a g.i. joe with the underwater scuba kit, and an astronaut one with a flashlight. i would beg my grandpa to get batteries for the dpv (diver propulsion vehicle) and the g.i. joe would scuba around the tub while i bathed, then in bed i would put the batteries in the astronaut flashlight (it actually looked like a reflector for an old polaroid flash bulb), and fall asleep before i could turn it off.
I went into the coast guard about 12 years later and got my very own right angle olive drab flashlight (1981). prior to that i was using grandpa's g.i. flashlights he used in the merchant marine. in the police academy, we had to drill with 3d maglites in our off hand and when i hit the streets, everyone told me to get the sl-20 or mag charger. (i started carrying a mini-mag in my pocket as a backup) one of the guys who worked with streamlight doing repairs showed me how to fix them because he was retiring and i had a bug for tinkering with everything (trigger jobs, tritium sights, ported barrels, etc). then one of my co-workers stole my sl-20x, and even though we were trained to use the lights for self defense, some of the guys got carried away, so i bought a new stinger. then the strion. then led mods. then high powered led pocket lights, that's when i realized, i stopped drinking to save money for more flashlights...

My addiction are custom titanium flashlights from guys like Mac, and the Godfather himself Don of Mcgizmo fame.

Why? Because they're cool.

I'm a family man. They take priority. I don't spend money on cars, watches, and fine cigars like I used to in my bachelor days. This has since taken its spot.

Yes, I guess that I could buy a ton of low priced lights for what I pay for my customs.
Now, that wouldn't be the same now would it!

I've always seen flashlights as a useful and necessary tool, but with the advent of more powerful leds and smaller packages, I can now carry a significant amount of light in my pocket and not even notice it until I need it. This has been great news for my aging eyes. Now I can read the fine print again, keep from tripping in a dark parking lot, find my way when the power goes out again, and spot the occasional yateveo in time to avoid coming within striking range.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (*Genesis‬ *1‬:*3‬ ESV)
Perhaps we have a God complex?
