I note lots of discussion about heat management on your C series drop-in thread but note none thus far with the tower module discussion. Is this because the upper base of the tower has a spring loaded pressure against the bottom of the lower section of the Turbohead assembly which transfers heat into the TH and body better than the outer reflector to lens-head contact of the C drop-in reflector?

Would it be helpful to use AS on the compression surface on the upper surface of the tower base?

Also, I was curious why you chose a default load of 1.4 amp with the single level XPG drives for both the tower and the C drop in while chosing a default of 1.2 with the multi-level C drop-in. I would think that the multi-level which doesn't have to be run continuously at max could handle at least the amperage of the single level.

Does the XPG rev 5 handle increased amperage with measurably less heat generation than the SPG rev 4? Also, you you don't appear to be offering rev 5 with the C drop-ins -- Why not?

(Please help me self-justify (rationalize?) buying a C drop-in at this time.)

I am not one in the have to worry about heat camp. I am also not in the have to have the last two lumens so I have to cool the led.

I run alot of leds and run them as hard as anyone and I do not worry with heat management like some do. I have yet to burn one up becuase of heat, other crazy things but not heat.

So since I do nothing special with my P60 drops other than buy good quality hosts I dont do anything about the towers.

The towers extend through a extremely well heatsinked reflector. The reflector was made to extract heat from very bright, very hot incan modules so I am sure it will handle the what i would consider lesser heat of the led.

Myself I would not put any AS anywhere on the tower as I see no where it would not make more of a mess than good but that is me. If you get it on the led alcohol is the best way to clean the lens with out damaging it.

Now as to amperage first off those are not revisions when marked R2 or R4 or R5 those are bins that Cree uses to describe the brightness of the led. I am not an elect engineer but as they make leds out of large pieces of material they are not all created equal. More or less they get what they are trying to but not all are the same brightness. That is much simplified but they are not revisions but a way for them to determine brightness. The R5 came out the same time the R2's did.

As to the 1.2 amps I am not sure where I have that written but it is probably under 8.4 volts as I have been using a 1.4 amp 3 level 3.6-6 volts for quite awhile.

The higher voltages are very hard to find amperages above a certain level with levels since. Multi cell hosts were more or less built for incans not leds as most leds have VF's less than 4 volts. Anything above that has to be bucked down which is done by producing heat more or less.
I am limited to 17mm by design of the module which means only so many options on drivers.

As for justifying a P60, I just build them the best I can and let you decide if it is a product you need.:D

Your mention of the 1.2 A for the XPG P60 modules is in post#15 on that thread. You might want to update it. I re-read that thread pretty carefully yesterday. Post #15 triggered my questions.

Thanks for confirming my expectation that the native heat sinking of the SF TH's is more than adequate.

I had wondered whether the XPG R5 bin generated less heat than the R4 bin because more electrical energy is converted into visible light with the R5 than with the R4. I theorized that less wasted energy might be converted to heat with the R5 bin at any given Amp load. Maybe each LED's vf variability swamps this possible effect.

As to the P60 module, I'm trying to decide what best complements the capabilities of my Fenix PD30 XPG R4 and your soon-to-arrive XPG tower. I have too many P60 and C60 heads sitting on too many 17mm bodies and extensions and e to c adapters. I also have quite a few protected and unprotected 17650's and 17670's. I still enjoy running incandescent 9V HOLA's with 2 * 17670's and 9V LOLA's with 2 * 17500's, and may eventually exhaust these LA inventories. 6V LOLA's run on 1 17500 plus 1 NimH and HOLA's run on 1 17670 plus 1 NimH seem too dim for the effort and required body tube length.

I'm not inclined to bore out any bodies or buy more 18650's at this time. My older unprotected 2400 maH 18650's are deployed in pairs in Mag C bodies and in a triplet in fivemega's 3 * 18650 adapter for his 6AA wide-body for high wattage PR based incandescents. (See the fivemega adapter and body at http://www.cpfmarketplace.com/mp/showthread.php?t=98265) Accordingly, I suspect that I'll go with a board which pulls a load no higher than the 2.5 Amp regulated ones you describe.

Hi, Dave

The SP-G R5 tower arrived today. The package is as professional looking as everyone says. The beam is as Donn reported with the 3" "T" TH and is maybe 50 % wider on the 2 1/2" TH.

The main difference I notice is that the hotspot exhibits a slight blending at the edge (maybe for 1/4 the width of the hotspot) on the 2 1/2" SRTH while it has a much smaller and more abrupt edge on the 3".

Hi All

Just wanted to post that I have Rebel 100's in cool white and neutral and warm white available

The newly released Rebel 71 in warm color temp which will run at about 240 lumens which is good for a warm white high CRI.

COLORS are available

I also have newly released Rebel 425 Royal Blue which is much brighter as it is a new design.

Also Red & Green XPE leds available

I continue to enjoy my XP-G tower unit. I'm mostly using it for max throw on a 3" T TH and various high wattage SF MN assemblies for wider hotspots. When the XM is released will its larger die fit on the tower? (You've said that the SST-50 won't fit, but I don't know the comparative sizes of the SST-50 and the XM)

Do you expect that any 2.0 A controller for the XM will fit on the tower?
 
I would like a Rebel 100/ 1 level 4-14 volts (Neutral white) ; is this possible?

Yes that is not a problem, I have both regular rebel 100 PWN1 and rebel ES 100 PWN1

They are both rebel 100's but the ES is the newest release.

Price is same as XPG $60

I've collected some lux measurements on the Netkidz XP-G towers that I built. Although based on the same tower that nailbender uses, I don't know what LED focus height is used in the nailbender towers and that can affect the hot spot lux value.

See here for some data. Unfortunately, it seems I never posted, and probably can't find now, lux measurements I made on a Netkidz XP-G tower using a driver with 1.4A drive current.

I have been using a .03 copper shim under a 8mm board from the shoppe with very small amounts of AA this give me the best all round XPG height.
The rebel led I found needs more height yet.

I have been using 1.4 amp drivers also.

That looks like a good approach. I think that my measurements for a Netkidz tower and an XP-G on a Sandwich Shoppe 8mm MCPCB showed that an 0.03" thick spacer plus thermal adhesive would probably put the LED die at the desired focus height.
