Broke glass sound.... My bedside maxabeam.... Every. Single. Time.

Some on this forum saying that, I actually think it might be true...

Likely our two pit's would sleep through it, but the collies are both high strung and would not. Think one of them can hear a mice fart (real or not) as often as she gets up and checks the house. But on first bark, they all cut loose, even if 2 or 3 don't even know what they are barking at. To see whats going on, for myself, Elektrolumens BNG (optic not reflector) and the for the wife, a Malkoff mag w a Kiu VL bezel and a carbide breaker tail.

The wifey and I have 2 Maine Coon cats that growl when they hear anything odd. At almost 20 pounds and lean they are some big cats, but I doubt they'll do any protecting.

Is this for when you hear breaking glass coming from the house at the end of the street or so you can burn a hole through your walls and not have to get out of bed to see the culprit lol?

....Yes? Lol

I also have a 1.5klm coast polysteel that I keep on nightstand as well but when I want target blind and I can still make them out clear as day....near OR far.... Maxabeam.

IDK about home windows but car windows make so much noise when broken due to the striking of the glass, that's why there are various methods employed to 'silence' the break such as 'crackling'. Regardless, my preference would be my malkoff HD, whether near or far it has the output and spread to cover and flood an area for positive identification and personal safety. Second choice, md2.

Pepper spray has the advantage of being non-lethal.

As I read through these responses, I found myself wishing I had some of the training that was mentioned. A course in home-defense tactics would be useful.

I also wondered what I would do if I confronted an intruder inside my home who was holding a hand gun. At that point, I am probably within my rights to shoot first, and ask questions later. Many people, however, perhaps including myself, would be tempted to try a citizen's arrest. "Freeze, or I'll shoot." might be a conversation starter. I expect, unfortunately, that such an attempt could easily backfire. Is shooting first the more appropriate response? I do not know.

You are exactly right -- you could use some training, if you're serious :) Any beginner's defensive course will run you through the Tueller drill, action-vs-reaction drills, and other concepts that will help clarify things for you. Not that every problem has an obvious solution, but at least you'll have the tools to the make ethical, legal decisions that also lead to you living through the encounter. I've seen some other talk of techniques on this thread that, IMO, come from people who have never trained at all, much less low-light force-on-force (on the other hand, I've seen posts describing tactics that I absolutely agree with). Another good reason to get some clarity on "what actually works for people who've been through such situations" vs "wow, that tactic sounds good!".

To answer the original question, I have a number of lights that all have the same basic characteristic -- 1"-bodied forward tail-mounted switch that always come on in high -- but the one light I always have on my nightstand no matter what is an old Surefire E1e body with a Malkoff drop-in (in an aftermarket head by ... Valiant?)

This is lou doing what lou does.....lumping.

And this is bird.

Neither of them is light on their feet, and the sound of them running down the hardwood to take up posted positions might cause an intruder to pause, at least until I make it down the hall with something bright and something sharp or boomy

I believed 30 years ago that must be Maglite 3D and up to be the best defence tools. Nowaday we have so many choice.
But the updated Maglite 3rd generation ML300 also the best light for me.

I also owned an A2L-RD, but HATED the main beam. It was that gross Seoul whatever LED they used in the P60L. You'd think for $200 they could've built the A2L with a better high output LED!

When the A2L came out they really didn't have "good LEDs" to work with, the only alternative would be the CREE XR-E, and Surefire never produced a reflector version using that LED, my suspicion because of the ring the package producing a halo under reflector conditions

I grab this light.

It serves three important functions:
1) it provides just enough illumination
2) provides target identification (don't want to shoot an innocent), and,
3) provides aimpoint... the shot pattern hits the hotspot

This has happened a few times. I sleep with a dozen lights on the night stand, but I grab the one I trust to always work: Armytek Predator Pro 2.5 NW. I also grab my 9mm.

Wife grabs phone and car keys. Phone to call 911 and car keys to hit the panic button. A car in the drive way on panic will scare off most intruders in a subdivision.

The flaw in the plan is that the wife sprints across the house to get to the kids, crossing the path of any bad guys. Her instinct has her do that faster than I can safely clear the area.

Simple, I'd grab my Surefire X300 which happens to be mounted on my G23 :)
