The standard Tana LE with Tana's own firmware (guppydrv style, Tana3) is also a good option.
For me, a lower low might be nice to have but I don't require a higher high in a McGizmo as I find the 3S adequate and also don't wish to chew through the battery quickly or generate too much heat.
One thing worth mentioning is that the 3S (and Hive) function great on primary and liion where a Tana LE will be liion only.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your Haiku whatever the LE but those 119 Don has are magic, I hope for everyone's sake he has a large supply as to me the B and C has not yet surpassed the McGizmo 119A for a pleasing beam.

Would be preferable to keep the battery options open, but I've really only been using Li-on for years now. I think the only primary only light I've even got in service is my Maus.

I've been leaning towards having Tana install an H17F in my Haiku for a few months now and am more convinced than ever that it is the move for me to make. I've always loved my 3S 119 Haiku but have long wished for both a higher high, and even more, a lower low.

Thanks for sharing your input and helping me to make this important decision with my only Haiku.

Although I don't want to take this thread farther OT here (since the H17F is not an OEM driver) , @kaichu dento , please feel free to PM me if you have specific questions as you try to decide .... I have extensive experience with all of the standard stock (1S / 3S / HiVe) McGizmo drivers, and just recently received a Sigma Regulus which uses the H17F.

I need to get my Haiku sent to me but my Haiku is definitely the narrower/throwier beam and the Rotary with less throw, softer projection. That said, they're both versatile enough to use as an EDC, and have at various times served that purpose. All this Haiku talk has me really missing it now!

This will vary, depending on specific emitter and/or reflector choices, for both the Haiku and the HDS

The Haiku with XPG reflector and XPG2/119 has more throw and a tighter, more defined hotspot than a HDS. It is a deeper, more narrow reflector.
The Haiku with the XML (XRE) reflector is a little bit shorter than the XPG and creates about the same beam diameter but has a more uniform and even spread of the lumens in the beam. It works with both the XML and XPG/119 creating a nice even beam. The old XRE in this reflector will be more like the XPG reflector XPG/119 LED combo (don't have an XRE LE).
As you know, the HDS has a general use type beam (Nichia/XPG variants). I would say it sits between the Haiku XPG reflector XPG/119 combo and XML reflector XML/XPG/119 LED combo in beam shape (I don't have a HDS/XPL but it looks to be nice and floody as in an even beam like my Haiku with XML reflector/119 LED).
Basically the Haiku has the deeper reflector and the HDS has a broader spill.

The 119V has a larger die so looking at the two you can tell the difference.

Look into the LED dome from above. If you can see the straight edges of the yellow die, in other words, a square, within the dome then it is a 119. If the dome is all yellow so you see a round yellow disk then it is a 119V

How does the reflector matter. Right now I have two extra McGizmo LE's (looking for a head to put them in), one is AA and the other a 6v, both Nichia. Is there any issue using these with the XML reflector as opposed to the XPG reflector?

Hey scoot. I really like the 119V in an XML reflector. It creates roughly the same beam angle but a much more even distribution of light so the lumens are spread more evenly than the classic bright, tight hotspot then noticeably more dull spill with the XPG reflector.
You'll lose throw but gain a more even brightness in the beam. Both beams are good but different.
Just make sure you use the little reflector oring (as always) when you seat the reflector down onto the LE.

I am about to pull the trigger on my first McGizmo, a Haiku. I have decided on a 119V but I have seen there are two types of finishes for the clips. Diamond etched and cracked ice would anyone have any pictures of these two finishes? I think I found a picture of the DE but am struggling with the CI, thank you.

I believe they are one in the same. (Just different names for it) I ordered my Makai a month ago, with this clip, and it looks stunning!

Thank you for the replies and yes K2 your right they are the same some call it diamond etched and some have called it cracked ice. My mistake I thought it was two different finishes. I am going to order diamond etched [emoji106]🏻

Well I have pulled the trigger on my first McGizmo, a 119V Haiku with diamond etched clip. Have been saving for a while for one of these but then something crops up so it gets delayed but now finally order placed. Huge thank you to Don for his patience and answering my questions over the years and thank you to you gentlemen on here. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas [emoji23]🤣[emoji23]
