This is what I am doing with very limited fund.

I am going to use 16pcs of MC-E LEDs, they are replaced from old flashlights.
and put them in the 4 X 4 array.
10Watts per LED.
totally 160Watts.

Is it necessary to use optics or reflectors?
I am not sure.
So I will go without them to have a try.

Anyone who use LED lights for photography too?

160° viewing angle is pure flood, with a siple 45° optic you can get 3x the lux.

Yes. Yes.
While I am not sure whether the full flood light can be helpful.
Have to try it out.
Of course it won't be as bright as a flashgun.

Whether you want full flood depends on how you're using it. I wouldn't really want full flood all the time, but if the optic is easily removable then that's a good solution.

Haven't got a use for such a contraption myself, I'll stick with portable flash gear, but I'm curious to see how it turns out!

You might want to ask "jeffosborne" as he uses LEDs for photography and has built a few LED lights for use in taking pictures.

If you really want to use LED's for taking pics, you'll either need some very good high-CRI emitters or an array of mixed emitters to give you a high-CRI output.

I use some Nichia 183's on an Al bar to light up some of my pics. :D

Hi Neo

I have exactly that plan, except I am using SST50s, warm and cool, and red emitters. they will then have individual controls for all the colors via potentiometers. The biggest problem I see with your plan would be heatsinking!
how will you keep the lightpanel cool?

I will try to install some CPU heatsink/fans in it.
