@orbital I don't think anyone is disparaging DeoxIT, or saying it isn't a good product. My point was about cleaning batteries, regardless of the product, really. I have never used a solvent of any kind to clean batteries, but like others have mentioned, I may have rubbed the contacts on my jeans, sometime in my lifetime--that's a few more years than I like to think about. ⌛ But I like to think I'm open-minded, and so I ask the question, is this a common practice among many forum members for a significant increase in battery performance or just like, an OCD exploitation for profit?

There's a question on the intent of this thread,, it's obvious.

I'v mainly use DeoxiT on batteries that were under very high amperage, which had significant oxidation<
Lithium Polymer batteries to be specific.

I see this thread closing, since there have been several on DeoxiT over the years.

Well this went sideways unexpectedly. It's far too easy to read unintended meanings into things written on the internet; it's all so lacking in the contexts and social cues which we all unconsciously rely on in the real world. No wonder we get so divided these days - there's even an occupational title for the specialists now: 'Troll; person who takes pride in dividing people'.

I read @IMA SOL MAN 's posts as best as I could in the spirit in which they were written - a little light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek, and friendly. Misusing the technical term "OCD", as we all do colloquially, and seeking other friendly folks here on CPF to comment on his find.
I for one have found the on-topic posts as interesting and smile-worthy as the OP, and have learned new things.

I think there's a lot to be said for assuming the best, keeping it simple, and responding in the same spirit.

For the record, Matthew 7:1 'Don't judge' is in the judicial sense.
Compare with John 7:24: 'Judge with righteous judgment.', which is in the discernment sense.

I think Jesus' words in Matthew 22:37 sum it up: 'You shall love God wth all your being, and then love your fellow man as though he were you'

I don't read that part of the Bible.

Wouldn't anyone that collects lights have some form of OCD?
I've been pondering your question, and I think the answer is: maybe. If the collecting is a compulsion that the person cannot control, then with my internet research of about 10 minutes on the subject, I would say it likely is.

Back to DeoxiT

It's not just a solvent, there is some kind of magic silicone micro-whatever in it, as an emulsion .
You can feel just a bit of slickness to surface cleaned.

Yes, you can use alcohol, sandpaper, turpentine, gas,,~,,
DeoxiT just works very well.
If the product works well and you like it, by all means use it. It might be better in some particular situations. I notice even on button and coin cells, it's necessary to buff them sometimes. This usually happens when the device is not working well, but the cell(s) read good on DMM. A bit of surface oxidation, or oil from fingers or...

Anyway I would avoid anything more than slightly abrasive (steel wool, sandpaper) especially on plated surfaces, and surfaces you can't easily replace e.g. springs.

A clean strip of newspaper drawn between electrical contacts can work wonders to rejuvenate them in a pinch. I suppose it would do the same for battery contacts.

Thankfully alkaline prices haven't reached the point where such a product would be useful for cleaning them. But...... we're slowly getting there.

Yeah, I remember someone on the forum who had been D cell shopping saying that everyone is selling them for about $2/cell. I have a portable radio that takes 6 cells, and my new Maglite takes 4, and I have a couple of boom boxes that take like 4-6, that's getting into some money to keep them all in service!

Never used Deoxit, but always clean the terminals on batteries with emery board and isopropyl alcohol. Just about every battery has a thin layer of oxidation on the terminals, some may have picked up a minute film of oil from the manufacturing machinery. Doesn't make any noticeable difference at low current, but makes a huge difference at high current, helping reduce resistsnce at the point of contact.
