In the USA is it legal to cuss out a cop?

Disturbing the peace is a very real charge.
It's thought of as a joke by many. But yes, if a bystander doesn't like seeing someone being stopped and detained by the police; which is perfectly legal for them to do so. And, he starts shouting raising a fuss; the police can ask him to stop. Oftentimes giving him an opportunity to just leave. Since he has literally nothing to do with their investigation. But some folks are just too stupid to take good advice when they hear it. So, the cuffs come out. Yes, being loud and obnoxious under certain circumstances will lead to an arrest.

Then you have individuals who are so dense, that they don't get it. They try to run! Okay, that's automatically Resisting arrest without violence. Another charge. Then the absolute "best" examples of humanity will try to physically fight the police in order to prevent being arrested. So they get charged with Resisting arrest with violence. Oh! That's the big one. That's the one that could result in prison time, as a felony charge.

Court date rolls around. Let's say the judge decides that the Disturbing the Peace charge in that particular instance was BS. Person never should have been charged with that in the first place. So that charge gets dismissed. Thing is.... the Resisting charge does NOT automatically get dismissed. But most folks think it would. No, no. That's a separate charge! Doesn't matter that it was only applied based on the initial charge. Doesn't matter one damn bit! Without violence, it'll likely be an additional fine or perhaps time served. At worst, a short stay in jail. With violence, oh! Seriously, how stupid do you think someone is going to feel for ending up in prison with a felony Resisting charge? Even when they get out, have fun finding a job! Ex-Felon status means outside of the construction industry, almost no one will hire you.

But hey, don't believe me. Consult with an actual criminal defense attorney. After you pay his consultation fee, he'll tell you exactly the same thing I did.

I'm a retired police sergeant, back in the day if you cussed at a cop you were required to have an excellent dental policy or have a Neurologist on standby as you may not recall your entire 3rd grade. Now, with all the cameras you will most likely get away with it. *** Good luck with that.*** With that said, the Supreme Court has said that civilians can cuss at the police. Just keep in mind that respect is a two-way street and respect must be earned not demanded. You get more with honey than with vinegar.

I'm sorry if my response is a little harsh, but we just had yet another NYPD officer gunned down and he hasn't even been buried yet, and you are asking this type of question has me shaking my head.

Don't lose too much sleep if an LEO gets killed. You don't know how many minorities they assualt, how much illegal stuff they do on the side and they probably weren't that great of a person to begin with. They know the risks when doing that occupation.

I personally don't try to have any empathy with police if they are attacked or killed. Have you seen some of the laws they enforce? There culture is that only they are good and everything else that just happens to the the colour black is evil. Lets not think they are Andy Taylor off of the Andy Griffith Show.

I'll just say this.... I've literally been mistaken for every single race under the sun. Including being mistaken for Chinese, by a Chinese man. Many years ago as a teen, I shaved off my moustache and never re-grew it; in order to lessen the possibility of getting mistaken for Hispanic by other Hispanic people. (And wow, do they get horribly angry and offended if they think you're one of them but don't speak Spanish.) One time, I completely shaved my head and a Black woman I'd been working with for nearly 6 months looked at me one day in astonishment, after I let my hair start growing out. She was shocked when she realized I'm not Black.

Point is, I get mistaken for a wide variety of minorities all the time. During the times I have been pulled over, I treated the officers with respect and composure on my part. That's what was returned to me. The one time I was arrested, I continued to behave in a respectful manner towards the police. And carried myself in a respectable manner. Which the drunken individual who claimed I hit him, certainly did not. Charges later dropped. If anything, the Corrections officers were the issue. The Police were professional.

I know that there are corrupt officers out there. There are good ones too. Then you have those who fall somewhere in the middle. They'll help people. But if they bust a drug dealer with cash on him. Somehow $2000 magically turns into $400. Just the way it is out there. But that's every group. Heck, I could say the same thing about individual Amish communities. And while I agree that he knew the risks involved in signing up to be a police officer, unless you specifically knew him on a personal basis, you can't honestly say that he was one of the corrupt ones or that he somehow got what he deserved.

Griego said he called Hare because Griego knew Hare would have the tools to fix the driver's vehicle. Hare came out in his own vehicle with his own tools.
While they were unsuccessful, "that was the type of person that officer Hare was," Griego said.

Two weeks ago, Hare responded to a call in which he tried to help another motorist in the dark.
In the early morning of March 15, Hare responded to a car with a flat tire along I-40 near Tucumcari. Police say the driver, Jaremy Smith, shot Hare and took his vehicle before crashing it down the road.

"He volunteered within the community. He was a coach for Peewee. He was at the school on a daily basis. Huge family man, loved his kids, loved his family, loved his girlfriend," Strand said.

Geeze, Man! Do you actually believe what you've stated above, or do you just enjoy trying to rattle other member's cages?

Well I'm not going to brag about something I've done but I will say that me and my friends watched some videos from France of a police car being firebombed with the cop still in it and that video of the policeman being shot to death by an IS guy.

I don't know why in 2024 I would be expected to be propolice. On the internet there are every kind of person with every kind of belief and some people's views vary.

Maybe in the early 90s when I seen Don Knotts on re-runs and my cousin was a cop in FL I would have thought differently.

With regards to the first video you mentioned, I saw that one as well.... I also saw the police officer showing remarkable restraint and standing his ground against the blood-thirsty mob, after he got out of his police car. Won't lie, he showed FAR more restraint than I would have.

I understand that the French legal system is vastly different so I don't really have an idea of how you react appropriately there. I lack the training and I'm unfamiliar with the laws.

I mean, it's a nation full of Socialists.
So their police are neutered as much as possible.
Still, that officer stood his ground. Didn't run. Didn't back down.

Trolling or not, I strongly object to this sort of attitude toward anyone, least of all a cop.
And I'm no great fan of the law in any country.

All system have their weaknesses, as do the people who made them, and as do you and I.

Human life itself is inherently valuable - I call you out on this one, @letschat7.

I don't know you, but you sound like a big piece of garbage. I hope someday you don't need law enforcement. You are part of the problem with society. What a piece of sh*t you are.

Indeed. I have several family members and friends who are law enforcement and they are nothing but upstanding.

You're right, they do get offended when they realize you're not what they think you are. I'm Italian, but I've been mistaken for Arab, Mexican and mixed white and black. Being mistaken for an Arab sucks at the airport when you're "randomly selected" for additional screening.
