You cannot drive 64458 at 250W.
64458 recipe is simple - 5 x IMR cells. No softstart required. Should get 17-17.5v at bulb at just over 10 amps, so 170-180W.
(I assume softsart will increase bulb life, but I have a 5 cell 644458 and sold another - both without sofstarts - both yet to pop a bulb)

edit - more like about 9.5 amps - so more like 160W....

I'm running 16 AAs in my 458 with probably a bit more volts @ the bulb. Even after letting the batterys rest over night after comming off the charger I have to run on medium for a while before going to high or poof.

Edit again. AW, hope no offence, caused.
This is an old sales thread so hope you don't mind.
I would understand if you did not appreciate my post though.

I should have added that:
1) Mag switch won't handle the high current so Nos would have to buy or make alternate switch for mag, or modify with mosfet or similar to bypass mag switch.
2) Your softstarter would bolt in and provide 3 levels of brightness.
3) My AW softstarters have proved reliable operating to my max which is about 180W

So you don't need a sofstarter for 64458, but it's a nice way to go.
