Hi guys.

Looking for a 1xAA light.

Durability and simplicity are paramount. (1 and 2 mode lights only).

Most of my lights are CR123 but I want to have the ability to use AA cells in a decent/efficient/durable light.

--

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light from a brick and mortar store. I am located in Australia.

_X__I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :)

____Less than $25.
____Less than $50.
____Less than $100.
_X__Less than $150.
____Less than $300.
____I have no limit.
_X__I'm flexible, tell me what you gotJ.
____Other, please specify ________

3) Format:

_X__I want a flashlight.
____I want a headlamp.
____I want a lantern.
____I want a dive light.
____I want a portable spotlight.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:

____Keychain size.
____Every day carry small (2-4 inches).
____Every day carry medium (4-7 inches).
____Holster carry.
____Big enough to need its own travel caseJ.
____I don't care.
____I don't know.
_X__N/A

5) Emitter/Light source:

_X__LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

_X__I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
_X__I would consider getting a light that is pieced together (for example a "host" or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a "drop-in" emitter from another source). Under the right circumstances, this path can provide more options to the consumer to meet specific needs, and can often be easily upgradeable as technology improves.

7) What battery type do you want to use?

_X__I intend to use alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C, D) (disclaimer, while it does not preclude all choices, these are not recommended for many of today's most powerful lights)
____I intend to use rechargeable nickel chemistry (NiCad, NiMH, NiZn)
_X__I intend to use lithium primary batteries (CR123, CR2, Energizer Advanced/Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA)
____I intend to use rechargeable lithium (li-ion) chemistry. Feel free to specify a size if you know which size you want (14500, RCR123/16340, 17500, 17670, 18650, etc.)
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery. (Note: these choices may be very limited unless you are looking at spotlights)

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

____I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (0-10 lumens).
_X__I want to walk around an unlit rural area (50-150 lumens).
____I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
____I want ridiculous amounts of lumens (800+ lumens).

9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light? Select all that apply.

____Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
____Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
_X__5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
_X__30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I want maximum throw possible)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
____30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
_X__3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase "you get what you pay for" is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A "night-stand" light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
____Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
_X__Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply):

____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today's high end lights).
_X__I don't care.
____I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

_X__A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
_X__I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
____I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Blinks to show location.)
____I want SOS mode.
____I want a beacon mode.
____I don't care.
____I don't know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
____Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today's flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
____Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
____I don't care.
_X__I don't know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any below.

____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____"Hybrid" light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
____Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments
_X__ Don't care

Quark AA Tactical. It has different outputs that you can program it so that you get different output when the head is tightened and loosened.

Plus, I beat the living crap out of mine and it kept on ticking.

I'd have to second the Quark. I had a 123 Tactical (only need the AA body to make it AA) on my keys for 18 months. They got dropped so many times I couldn't count, but it still lights up and works like new, even though most of the anno is gone and there's chunks of metal missing.

It's the XP-E version. I only wish I'd bought more.

My AA2 Tactical has been dropped several time bezel first onto concrete and just keeps shining. Really are great lights for the money.

So far the 4Sevens Quark Regular AA is the only one I can come up with ... And the Peak.

link removed

All I'm looking for is a bombproof (like Malkoff or SureFire) single AA light. Either 1-mode with 40-60 lumens, or 2-mode with <1 lumen low and a high mode don't care how high though.

Spill/throw doesn't matter, just no extremes.

-----

Should I be looking at any others?

My favorite edc lights are single AA lights. I'm always looking for a better replacement, but so far my favorite is the Quark AA. I prefer the regular UI, but you may prefer the tactical UI so you'll have just two outputs (head tight & head loose.) The tactical version has a forward clicky; where as, the regular version has a reverse clicky. You can buy different clickies though since these lights lego with each other. You'll want to run it on a 14500 for the excellent output & runtimes of a rechargeable Li-ion. Also, get a deep carry pocket clip for it if you plan on edc'ing this light.

To find the Quark AA with the Tactical UI, go to 4sevens website then click on the "4sevens" link (top left) then the "Quark Tactical" link.

+1

I'm trying real hard here to spend some more money, but I've been really spoiled by 4Seven's focus on good, well-spaced, low-end modes - what I end up using 95% of the time. Runtime is one important reason, but I really like using, and keeping, my night vision.

Thank you.

I just purchased the Quark AA Tactical (I like momentary).

Hopefully it works better than the rest of the Chinese lights I've had.

If you are looking for an AA light just for the convenience of the battery format and not the size my suggestion for a bombproof would be surefire/malkoff/moddoolar combination. You will have to buy a Z44 bezel $26, a moddoolar TL50 tube with C head adapter $59, an AA to 18mm sleeve $10, your choice of tailcap (Z41 twisty, Z41 w/ McClicky, Z59, moddoolar triad, etc.) $20~90, and your choice of a malkoff dropin (M31/w/l, M30/w/l/f) ~$60. If you can already own some of these parts or can find some used on CPFMP this build could cost you as little as $120. Best bet would be to buy a 6P for cheap and just buy the 50mm body tube and AA sleeve from oveready.

I've been carrying a Quark 123 Tactical in my jacket pocket for a couple of year now. It's hit the floor/pavement more than a few times, works fine, still seems very solid. Hope yours holds up as well.

Personally I haven't had much luck with 4Sevens lights. I'm really surprised no-one has mentioned the Jetbeam BA10 and BC10 (take a look at the torture tests on Youtube!).
The Fenix E11 feels pretty robust too - much more solid than my Quark Mini AA.

Besides the quark recommendation check out Klarus P1A.
on their website it is advertised as "Klarus Professional", "Military Grade", "tough", "1.5m ANSI FL-1 impact resistant", "reliable", ..

do you believe them?

If you want to further your collection of bomb-proof lights, check out the HDS Systems ones... They're widely recognized for their toughness and reliability!

(I've been wanting one of those lights for quite some time... :()

In my eyes, the quark has some serious design flaws that made me go back to my LD10, the quark head and body and so on are designed to be modular with 2xAA body and other batteries, this makes the porportions very wierd of the head and tail compared to length and thickness of the body, this makes little room for the pocket clip and its placement is very akward and gives the light a quite unbalanced placement i the pocket..

Bombproff is maybe hard to find, i hope hds will make a single aa or 3xaaa like the maglite xl100 one day, what about a nitecore d10 if you can find one, it would be a nice choise.

For bombproof take a look at some of the videos of the jet beam ba10 on youtube, there is a guy smashing it with a big wrench, filing, dropping, run it over with truck and they boil it in water and even sets it on fire (not the same light in every video), other jetbeams have been know to withstand shotgun shots without problem.. That would fit my description of a bombproof light, but the quark is a terrible choise in my eyes

Man except for the 1 AA description you've just about exactly described a Malkoff Little Twisty with an M31WL drop in.
