My SuperFire WF-501D from QualityChinaGoods.com has been flawless and is incredibly bright (it's probably 180-200 lumens although I have read sights advertising it as much as 500 lumens). It was $23 with free shipping.

SuperFire and UltraFire appear to be nearly identical and I would not hesitate to buy another incan light of either brand. LEDs on the other hand, I'm still on the fence if they are as reliable from these cheap brands.

JETBeam. A more expensive Jet-U with higher QC could have been branded Surefire. Well...maybe if it ran on CR2.

Dorcy

the super 1 watt is hard to beat....for my own use or to convert others

I once considered having people trade in their 2D kryptons for a Dorcy 1 watt until I ran out of money [yeah, trading a $5 light for a $20...you'd figure] but I made some long lasting converts....until they lost their light:ohgeez:

Those curved green ones we had in the army.

Inexpensive White, red, blue lights, plus a spare bulb. What more could you want?

I think the brand is 'Blackspur', available from my local Poundland. They produce some tripe, but also some little gems. I would never use them as my primary source of light, but they make an excellent group handout flashlight.

As greenLED sez,

i really like the useful and rugged Mini-Maglite 2AA "classic".

Dependable design, and available in pretty colors, also. :)

But . . . .

It REALLY shines when you mate it with one of these LED modules:

Can't say enough for these wonderful upgrades.

Way better than the boring Nite-Ize 3-LED upgrade.
(which, admittedly, only costs half as much, and is available all over).

Putting these modules into Mini-Maglites
has made me fall in love with Mini-Mags all over again.

Oh, and you can view my thread here,
about my very first Mini-Mag.

Dorcy - all their lights work out of the package including the cheap plastic incans.

Fenix - a bit more money than the Dorcy but the minmum number of lights with problems make me go with them instead of lights 1/3 the price.

With all this talk about SF lights and expensive lights, i thought i would start a post about ones favorite inexpensive brand of light(s).

My favorite is Dorcy....especially the Dorcy 1AAA and Dorcy's on clearance or sale...

What say you?

Would have to be the ubiquitous, plastic-bodied, slide switch Eveready 2D with PR2 bulb.

Eveready has always had this light available since sometime in the 1960s, IIRC.

Fresh batts yield 15 to 20 lumen output with a decent throwing spot. 2D cells will pump out enough light for long enough to accomplish those tasks that arise unexpectedly, such as changing a tire.

So long as it isn't dropped, this light is acutally fairly reliable. Will rarely fail on you all at once. Instead, it will grow dimmer and flicker even with fresh batts. That's just its way of warning you that it's time to buy a new one!

Available in corner stores, gas stations, etc. all across the USA. Probably the most widely distributed and best selling light ever produced. Still less than 2 bucks last time I looked.

Many of the ones mentioned here and also EYJ from DX as it seems to be one of the better quality lights - these are typically the larger and heavier lights similar in size and weight to a SF U2 and they have very good quality machining. I think some of the Wolf-Eyes would qualify as inexpensive (6PX I got was $22.50) and they are definitely nice quality.

That isn't the problem. It's that whatever light we start with, we start modding till it's 2-5 times as much.

Here is a link which discusses that Mini-Mag SMJLED module:

(Specifically, see my post # 128)

https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/127907

Lots of "heavy reading" there. :)

But, to summarize, just read my post # 128.

Oh, and to avoid any potential confusion . . . .

I'm not sure that the modules sold by Sandwich Shoppe
are the same as the ones sold by LightHound.

I realize that LightHound's price is a bit lower.

I can tell you, however, that i bought mine from Sandwich Shoppe,
and these modules are Wonderful !

Here, once again, is the link to Sandwich Shoppe:

Hope this is helpful.
