My thoughts, speaking practically would be less expensive, considering won't have to pay anyone else to manufacture parts, labor, and time.

But.. are they gonna up the prices to help pay for the new machines and equipment?

If they are more expensive than what they already are, I’m out.

Even accounting for inflation, I think $300 today would be a very competitive price. The $4-500 pricetag for a lot of rotaries is kind of tough to swallow. The Rotary is very neat, and is kind of in its own category, and I understand how amazing it was in the halcyon days of the CR123A...but, I don't NEED a light necessarily sipping a CR123A dry, and when you can get a really amazing light made in USA for a fraction of the cost; it's hard to justify. A Malkoff MDC, Malkoff Bodyguard, or Elzetta Alpha are about half the price as a Rotary, and they're no slouch in the durability category, so the question becomes: is the battery sipping adjustability worth half the cost? A quality 16340 is under $10, and it's not a huge deal to simply charge and swap that around more often.

The Rotary UI is easily the best ever, BUT...is it worth twice as much as a two or three mode Alpha or MDC? As much as I'm not a fan of the Malkoff M361 mode spacing and mode switching...it does make for a great EDC light in a compact body...

I spent a lot of time milling around the idea of a rotary for my birthday this year, but instead got a literal box of Malkoff parts for the same money.

I WOULD hope in-house COULD cut costs, as I assume defects/rejects are a large driver of cost. Then again, a little more customization could also better justify the cost.

If I could pay $400 for a rotary, and get almost any emitter I wanted in almost any CCT, and choose a battery compartment size (CR123A, 18650, 14500, AA, or 18350), that's be worth the price of admission.
 
4500K 519? Ohhhhh, sweet mercy.

I'm going to jinx myself on purpose here: If they do a 4000K rotary that runs on a single AA Eneloop for $400 or less, I'll buy that immediately.

I really, really like 4000K. I love warm emitters, and I HATE cool white, but those 4000-4500K neutrals just look...so good...I think the touch more warm of the 4000K really gets me.
 
I've never seen Nichia LED's 519B before but couldn't find the datasheet in my search. 519 series seems to be easier to use since the spot is larger than 219.
 
Hello tongkang! They made plenty of the 120 XP-G HCRI lights as they were the standard HCRI offering for a few years I believe. The last batch that was calibrated at 140 lumens were made in much lower numbers (like less than 40).

I just noticed below, as @ilikeguns40 noted in the screenshot he posted, prices do appear to have gone up about $36, so...I'm guessing the new equipment won't be able to offset inflation with productivity gains...

I guess we'll see if new body/battery compartments become a reality, and how that all shakes up, but I'm not sure how much value new emitters and compartments will be adding to the equation. I'm a little afraid if we do see an AA Rotary, it's going to end up being $500+.

Maybe I just live in a bubble, but while I understand inflation is very real, I don't think I know anyone whose wages have kept pace, and maybe I'm entirely off base (I know increasing wealth inequality has created a bifurcated society where the upper levels of income have been increasing spending), but I'm just not sure if there's that much of a niche for these when we start getting into the $500+ range. $200 in January of 2000 is about $375, and I'm not sure what year the rotary came out, but it seems like, as production has increased, productivity has gone down? Without major changes, the cost of production should be declining over the years.

I can't imagine I'm the only person who's been looking at a rotary for years, and the ever increasing price just keeps delaying that.

Again, I'll reserve final judgement until we see the new stuff actually roll out, but I guess I missed this increase earlier, and so it's kind of tempered my enthusiasm...
 
These are hobbyist and luxury goods. The rotary has arguably the best UI out there for an EDC. They are not built to a price point.

HDS can and will charge what the market will bear. FWIW, have you priced a Haiku lately? Even modern Surefire?
