For me, 15 lmns (ok, 10-20 lmns, depending on throw/output, etc) IS the sweet spot for a AAA flashlight!
The ONLY thing a Single AAA flashlight makes ANY sense for, is as a back-up (or back-up, to a back-up) flashlight, FOR ME
I've NEVER understood the obsession for a "muti-level" AAA flashlight, FOR ME
You find the optimal lumen level, be it 15 lmns (or somewhere between10-20 lmns), and get the longest runtime you can from it, FOR ME
Why, in the good lord's name, would I want a "HIGH" level that CUTS my runtime level to minutes/seconds, for a back-up (or a back-up, TO my back-up) flashlight?
As always, I realize I use my flashlights differently than most here, as I use my flashlights for work, NOT as toys, FOR ME

You know, Tex.Proud, I looked at that very knife, the Knafs OCT. I liked the blade-shape, reminded me of a Santoku cooking knife. I don't like full sheepsfoot, Wharncliffe, straight-razor, etc. blades, because I always want a little bit of front-to-back rocking motion when I'm slicing. That Knafs blade has just enough belly to satisfy me that way.
Didn't buy it, because I am currently out of the States. Maybe when I get back home....

One thing I will say for multi mode lights like the E01, is that the 5 lumen low, while not great if you just wake up middle of night, is enough light to get a lot of normal, small stuff done and will run for a day or so. Then you always have the mid to bump up to if you need it. 4.5 hours is pretty good for 25 lumens, although yes, 7 hours at 15 or so would be better.

Right! Cut all those brightnesses by at least 5Ă, maybe even 10Ă, and it would be an awesome cockroach light.
It's a great little knife. Mine is the knifecenter.com exclusive. When wearing dress pants at work a small knife is better. It can still process a lot of cardboard receiving supplies for the shop. Dice a sausage link to add to your eggs. Not intimidate folks around you. Etc...The blade also snaps out quicker than most of my knives. A high quality little beast.

Lookin good. I will say, that for me, as far as pure flashlight fun is concerned, AAA is where itâs at. Mind you Iâm Eneloop only so itâs AA and AAA lights for me, and my AA lights are awesome and fun in their own right. But, the tiny nature and ease of carry make the AAA lights a hoot to mess with.

I might or might not be splurging on a Peak Eiger in Aluminum...if I like it, I might release it in favor of the SS version, but want to send a special request for a dedomed 519A 5000k...anyone tried a DD 519A with the "narrow" optic? If possible, any pics?

The Olight I3e EOS was the first really tiny mass-market* AAA that I purchased. But then I got the Skillhunt, and really preferred it. Certainly for hi CRI, but actually for form factor as well.
*I have old Preon Atom zeros that are even tinier, and in TI even lighter, but those are rare.

Iâm sure Iâll try the E3a again and more than likely send it to Vinh to have him dial down the output. The body on those little guys feels great in hand. Nice and grippy.
These days it's a Fenix E01 V2.0
I treat it as a dual-level (3 lmn/25 lmn) flashlight, but as you said a single level of 15 lmn (+/-) level for maybe 7 hrs. (+/-), that would be outstanding!
I have absolutely NO use for the 100 lmn level on it, and it (100 lmn) is nothing but a battery "depleter", FOR ME

Make it a Single Output, single AA flashlight, just like the "Original Fenix E01", FOR ME
At say approx. $15 (even $20), I'd buy these like HOTCAKES!

I agree, completely. KISS, just like in your signature block.
I would add:
1) give this light springs at each end of the battery so that it can run AAA cells without needing an adapter.
2) make the circuit fire up on low-voltage cells, e.g. maybe down to 0.8v or even 0.6v
3) pot the circuit for robustness.
The old CMG Infinity and later Gerber Infinity were kind of like this. I wish they were still available!
