The Malkoff Front Porch

Excellent chart RWT. Interesting to see an M31LL as early as 2011.
Also M31WL produced in 2011 and 2013.
Perhaps these were small number limited editions for Oveready or a group buy here at CPF?
I purchased (4) of the M31LL's, in 2010 and 2011, directly from Gene

Shame they never became a regular offering. The Nichia ones from Kosen will hopefully be available soon. If the only way to get an M31LL was with a cool SST-20 I would still buy it but high-CRI is nice to have.

I’m giving the Thyrm Switchback 3.0 deep carry a try on this Malkoff Monster. This thing is bombproof after using 2 battery bumpers to stop any spring bounce, which occasionally causes a mode change if not used.

The Switchback initially seemed to have a flimsy clip, but it’s actually designed to slide up and down for easier button access. While the malkoff tail cap does not allow for ideal operation with the switchback, I’m not using it with a pistol anyways, so the grip ring is nice.

Kosen appears to have released the M31WLL in 519a sm273 and MDC HCRI lights (3-mode LMH 30-185-500 lm) in 519a with sm273, sm353, and sm573 options available.

Additionally, it looks like the MDC V3 (field configurable model) will be released soon after in sm273 and possibly sm353 options available per the item description on Kosen's website.

Here are some quick and dirty details on the M31WLL:

It should technically be noted on the power source that the input voltage is 0.8 to 3 volts and requires 1.8v (~2*) for FULL output. I think this is important to know as you can run this on 1xAA NiMH for further reduced output (~30lm).

Ordered 2x M31LL 😄
Been using 219b Illumn M31LL over last few days. 60 lumens is just right for a walk outside. Not much throw but lights up in front of you nicely.
You’ll like the 519a 2700k for you evening walks.. very cozy tint. I actually grabbed a dummy CR123 from malkoff and running a Li-ion USB-C 3V Keeppower in an MD2 with high-low ring. Very nice low!

My Dad absolutely hates cool white tints. He’s spent most of his life as a truck driver with halogen headlights and doesn’t like most LEDs. It’ll be interesting to see if he likes 2700k. I just like the way reds pop with hi-cri LEDs.

Well, if you don't have specific plans, one is fine.

I have been just HANKERING for some low low M31s (I've been begging Kosen forever), so I need at least two, haha.

Maybe I should buy the M31WLL and convert my Surefire Z3 to use double AA. Are there any standard tube/adapter you can use or what’s the easiest way to use double AA?

In your Z3, you should just be able to drop 2xAA in there with the M31WLL head. It’ll have some rattle due to the smaller diameter of AA vs CR123.

It’ll also run on a 2xAA MDC body with VME head or MD3, albeit you’ll want spacers if you don’t want any rattle in the MD3. I like the MD3 option as you can utilize the high/low ring for extended runtime and output options.

For a quick and easy AA sleeve in a 16mm Surefire 3 cell body I use a magazine cover cut roughly in half lengthways and rolled up into a tube (needs to be 2xAA or 100mm wide).
I’ve used Oveready Delrin sleeves (no longer available) in the past and they’re probably the gold standard, but some thick rolled up paper works too.

It states 3.7-9.0v driver. Then near the bottom of the page it says: working voltage 2.6-9.0v.
Sounds like above 3.7v it’s in regulation and below 3.7v it’s direct drive. Maybe it has the same driver as the newer 9v M361.
I don’t think it would work on 1.5v but it probably will work direct drive on 2xAA. Eneloops/NIMH would likely be quite dim as the voltage is a bit lower.
Only way to be really sure is to test it though.

Edit: I was talking about MDC L-M-H.
MDC V3 has 2.7-6.0v programmable buck driver. It probably works in the same way as the MDC L-M-H with regard to input voltage.
Boost drivers work best for 3.0v or less.

For a dedicated 2AA body, Lumens Factory has released their version of the E2L AA body.
You would need a Malkoff VME head as the tube is "e" series threading.
